G70-111EM - Wireless not working with Windows 7 Professional

Dear Users,

After getting Error 1002 during Factory reset and not being able to solve this. I have decided to buy Windows 7 and install this on my G70-111EM laptop.

The problem I am now having is I can't cannot to the internet with Wireless.  Wired LAN connection works fine.

When I press WIRELESS BUTTON next to the POWER ON BUTTON Wireless ON (Normally lights up BLUE) Wireless OFF (Normally lights up Amber).  Its currently showing AMBER when I keep it pressed it turns BLUE but within a couple of seconds goes back to Amber. 

All the drivers are installed and control panel shows no conflicts. 

1. has anyone had this same problem.

2. How do I check what is the actual wireless hardware that I in the laptop.

3. If someone can help me with how to find out the hardware details then I can try and find the correct driver for this hardware.

4. I will tonight find out the name of the driver that is currently installed as parts of the windows 7 installation.

The drivers for Windows 7 for your notebook are here.

  32-bit 

  64-bit 

I can't state with certainty which wireless device you have.

Look for stickers in the bottom of your notebook with the battery removed. Post what you find.

The other method is by going to Device manager.

Type devmgmt.msc in the start search box and then press enter.

The device manager will open. loook at network devices and select the triangle on the left side of it to open it up.

Now right-click on the wireless device (with the yellow exclamation point next to it) and select properties.

Post an image like the one you see here by using the snipping tool in Windows 7.

How to use the Snipping tool in Windows 7.

You can also post the top line with all of the PCI\VEN information. I will need that to identify your wireless device.

You did not state whether your Windows 7 version is 32-bit or 64-bit. It does make a big difference.

Is the FCC ID and model number the same as this one? I can't see much on the image that you  posted. Use the Windows 7 snipping tool for Device Manager. It is even better than a camera.

1) Please find what I see when I do Properties.  There are many tabs which one do you think will give you most useful information.

2) I have now worked out how to use the snipping tool for windows screen capture 🙂

3) The model number of wireless card is AR5BXB63 Windows 7 driver 32-bit, I have tried this driver and no success.

4) On my card there is no FCC ID but Atheros Model: AR5BXB63 is printed on the White label.

5) Another driver resource is here at Microsoft Answers. This is the exact problem that I am having as well.  The problem is in my BIOS I have NO Advance options to allow me to RESTORE. 

6) The Button on the Laptop seems to be the problem, Its forcing the wireless to stay disabled (Amber in colour)

7) I have borrowed a USB Wireless dongle NETGEAR WG111 v3 and installed this and with this I can connect to the internet by wireless.  The button the on the laptop is still AMBER. 

I think the the HP Wireless button and Windows 7 32 bit have a compatibility issue. What are your thoughts.

In the following image I have used the Advanced tab of my wireless module properties window. Do you also have the ability to enable the wireless radio visible in your Advanced tab?

Attention: the following Software/Download links are only for the HP G70-111EM notebook!!! You can find the appropriate downloads for your specific notebook here: LINK

I'm quite sure that I have the appropriate solution for you!! And I'm quite depressed about the inability of HP, its support-employees and their update-policy

So, there are a few steps to take, to get your Wlan running again. To be exact: you could "repair" it in a single step! But please use my complete manual, step by step! So here we go:

1. First of all, you should use the latest Bios (January 2011): HP Bios Update

2. Run 'Windows 7 Mobility Center' by pressing 'Windows Key + X' or through your control panel (HowTo).

3. Here you can see a 'Wireless Network' section. Can you turn it on, by clicking the button? Or is it greyed out and disabled? - Let me guess: you cannot click the button, it's greyed out?!...  Cause I'm quite sure you couldn't improve the situation with the previous measures, let's go on.

4. Download the HP Quick Launch Buttons for your notebook and install it.

5. Reboot.

6. Again: any improvements so far? (I guess: no!)

7. As next step, download the HP Wireless Assistant and install it.

8. Reboot.

9. Now the most important step - we revive your wireless: click 'Start' (Windows logo), enter 'wireless assistant' into the search field and select HP Wireless Assistant from the list.

10. Up and running, you should see your wlan device under 'Installed Wireless Devices':

Click on 'Properties' and you'll see ~4 boxes which you can check/activate. One box sais 'independent controls for wireless devices'. Make sure this box has a tick in it and click apply, then when you return to wireless assistant there should be a box that says 'turn on' click this and my wireless turned blue straight away. However....

11. ...if the 'Turn On' button is (still) greyed out, you just have to press the orange-glowing hardware-wireless-button on your notebook once. After a few seconds the colour of the 'Turn on' button should change its colour and you should now be able to click it!

I have this problem, too. My HP notebook (Presario CQ-60) has also built-in this wireless card from Atheros.

Trying nearly everything I'm still not able to reproduce the situation which suddenly turns off the wireless card.

I suspect the Windows energy options of deactivating the wireless card, but I'm not sure. Therefore I disabled all power saving options regarding the WLAN. That means in EVERY power schemes' advanced options you have to stop Windows from saving energy regarding the Wlan, and in device manager stop the wireless driver in its properties to deactivate the card in order to save energy. Here a step by step manual:

Again: I'm not sure if this helps finally. So give it a try.

Apart from that this cannot be a real solution, it's only a workaround. Hewlett-Packard couldn't help me either, they only sent me a new wireless card. Moreover they told me too (as mentioned above), to reactivate the wlan module in the Bios' power options - BUT here the same: there is no such option cause they cutted down the Bios extremely *argh* That makes me angry!

For ME, it is clear as mud: there is a severe bug! Whether it is a Bios, OS, wireless card/hardware or driver/software problem is hard to say. But the proposals to deinstall and reinstall another/newer/latest/older/whatever driver are worth nothing. It seems, that a command tells the wireless card to power off completely. And neither a new driver, nor a restart, nor the Windows Mobility Center, nor a handstand can revive it - only the HP Wireless Assistant (and a complete new installation of Windows 7 as far as i remember)!

Interesting is also, that if one turns of the wireless function with the help of Windows Mobility Center (Windows-button + X), one cannot revive it with the help of HP's Wireless Assistant but only with the Microsoft tool. And as we have seen it's the same vice versa. But why?? That's so senseless and unnecessary complicated. As a matter of fact, i never had installed HP Wireless Assistant under Windows 7. So every time this problem occurs, one has to install HP's assistant to get rid of this annoying bug. But i don't want to have this additional and unnecessary software on my PC.

Besides: the bug still persists.

PS: I ended up with Microsofts Atheros driver from Window's update function. In my case it connects faster than any other driver found on the internet (i also tested the ones from the Czech inofficial Atheros website).............
