Good Morning,
I have a G-series laptop currently 1 1/2 months out of warranty and it is making a grinding noise upon start up. It seems to go away once the laptop has started up completely ad the desktop is ready.
I have a second laptop of the same make/model and purchased at the same time with an lcd that died two weeks after the warranty expired.
So, long story short I have two 13 month old laptops that have significant issues. Help!

The grinding noise could be the fan or the hard drive. Next time you boot up carefully put a plastic coffee stirrer in the fan area to keep it from spinning, do you still hear a grinding noise? If not it is the fan, if so then move on to the next step. (I don't advocate leaving the fan blocked for any longer than a quick test FYI).
If the grinding noise continued then it's most likely the Hard Drive, go into the BIOS F10 at startup and navigate to the Diagnostics Tab and then run a Hard Drive test and see if it returns an error.

Most likely just annoying, it depends more so if it is doing it's job. Is it under warranty still?

When you first boot up and see the HP splash screen, press F10 to enter the BIOS

a nother reason could be when the pc is to cold. that happens sometimes to mine when i had open the window and the cold air got on the laptop. asa the laptop warmed up a little bit the noice is gone.
F10 means the key F10 on your keyboard it is right under the zero and "O" key.
