I'm pretty sure it's the backlight that's gone in my HP Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop. I can hold it to the light, and I'm able to make out what I'm doing, but it's definitely not ideal, and there's still a lot that I can't see.

I've looked at other posts, and still can't really figure out what it is I should do. I thought about taking the monitor apart, but after reading some of the other posts, I'm not so sure that's a good idea. The reason I was going to do that is because I was half-hoping that I just bumped something out of position when I dropped it before it went dark, though I didn't notice it until I turned it on the next day.

If someone could please help with the issue, it would be heavily appreciated!

Thanks for the additional  information, but I found your model number earlier with your part number.

When you get to the library look in the left column on how to remove the specific items so you can ultimately remove the screen.

When you're in there you can check the connections, but as I mentioned, if the back-light is broken, it may be easier just to replace the whole screen. The back-light usually are sold as kits with the inverter and the cost is around 60.00 $.

With that in mind it's best just to replace the whole screen, the screen is not meant to be taken apart to gain access to the lamp. The plastic and metal parts are usually held in there with this permanent double sided tape and if you try to take it apart, things usually get damaged.

You can buy a screen form these guys, they are in Canada.

You are running a 15.6 inch screen (diagonal) at a resolution of 1366 x 768

If there is no inverter then your back light is LED and you have to order the correct screen for that, but I am 99% sure it will have an inverter.

You may want to install a new inverter first to rule that out before spending money on a new screen.

There are a bunch of different ones that are compatible, I wouldn't even bother with trying to replace the back-light, the screens are inexpensive.

What's your full model number and I may be able to help.

Because of the fall, more then likely the small, thin backlight tube(s) have broken. I would not recommend replacing these as they are very difficult to get at.

Ounce I have your model number or part number I should be able to tell you more.

I have the product number. Is it something that I should e-mail to you in private, or is it something I can post in the forum?

HP Recommended

The product number and part number is public knowledge, it's the serial number that I don't need and should not be made public.

 Thanks for asking.  :generic:

Here is my P/N  NQ226AV  and my model number dv8t-1000cto.

If you enter my product number in the HP support page, this is what you get.

 Public property.

The product number I've found is VG673UA but I can't find the model number. I tried the auto-detect feature on the HP website, but the P/N was all I could find.

Sorry, I was able to find everything after I realized how obvious it is.

P/N = VG673UA

M/N = 409CA

My warranty expired a while ago, otherwise I would have just sent it in right away for repairs.

If they didn't start using LED until 2010, then I think it's safe to say that I have the CCFL type, as I bought my computer in September of 2009. Do you think that's correct?

Also, my computer screen right now is the glossy type, but would I be able to install a matte screen if that's what I ordered as a replacement? I don't like the glare that I get on the glossy monitor, but are there any benefits to it?

HP Recommended

There is only one screen there that is CCFL and that is matt in the link I gave you, I would go with that one, and that  will work fine. The key is to match the resolution, size and back-light type and we have taken care of that. On some models there is a plastic bezel over top of the LCD screen and those are shiny. So even if you install a matt screen it won't make any difference. My dv8 is like this.

What I can gather from the Media Library, HP has not installed an extra plastic cover on your model so ordering a matt screen will help with the glare.

You will know for sure when you dismantle the screen assembly. Concerning the CCFL type, when you take it apart and you find two wires at the bottom of the screen (probably blue and white) that plug into the inverter then it is defiantly not a LED back lit screen.

Dismantle the screen assembly and make sure that none of the cables have come loose from the fall. The cables are probably still plugged in as they are snapped in there quite well, but you never know. The flat ribbon cable that plugs into the monitor is taped in, but check it anyway.
