See if this driver works for the Intel Gigabit ethernet adapter in your PC:

 

I'm assuming you need the driver for XP, since you left me to guess.

 

You want the first file listed for XP 32 bit.

Unfortunately, I don't know why you are getting that error.

Is maybe ethernet controller (HW) defective?

Possibly.

 

It is hard to say. 

 

It can't be completely defective since it shows up in the device manager.
