Compaq nx6110
Microsoft Windows XP

Hello.

I have a problem with my wireless connection. I found old Compaq nx6110 and decided to reinstall OS. Everything went fine, so I started to install drivers. I have no unknown devices in Device Manager right now, but my wireless connection doesn't work. I checked my network adapters and I have two of them:

 - standard Broadcom Ethernet Connection (which is working)

 - network adapter 1394 (driver has been installed by Windows, but I don't know what this device is supposed to do)

So it turns out that I don't have any wireless connection. I flashed BIOS and checked if my wireless radio is turned off, but I couldn't find any useful options. Moreover, the button, which should enable WiFi, doesn't work. I also installed HP Quick Launch Button drivers and tried to enable WiFi by Broadcom WLAN Utility (which didn't started, when I tried to access it by Control Panel).

I think that my WiFi is dead, but maybe you can help me out. Sorry for my bad english.

Buras.

Hi:

See if installing this software allows you to turn on the wireless card and install the driver you need if has not been installed already.

I forgot to mention that I tried this software before, but effect was the same as Broadcom WLAN Utility. Hovewer, I installed it again just to make sure that I hadn't screw up, but nothing happened. I can't access HP Wireless Assistant through Control Panel and it doesn't show up in my system tray. The button is still inactive.

Sorry that didn't work.

The only other suggestion I can offer would be to go into the BIOS and make sure the wlan card is enabled and shows as present.

If it is enabled but still doesn't work, you may want to shut down the PC and try removing and reseating the wireless card.

The contacts may have become oxidized since you have last used it.

Either that or the card is no good anymore as you suspected.

The only problem is that I can't find any option in BIOS, which would enable my WLAN card. The BIOS itself is updated to last version.

I'm gonna try reseating the card, but first I have to find it.

It' s underneath the keyboard.

Here is the service manual...chapter 6...section 6.8...

Very interesting. I removed cover and found RAM, two cables (from WiFi card) and empty slot, which I thought was for another RAM stick. I'm afraid that I don't have WLAN card.

Well, at least you found out why the wireless doesn't work.  :generic:

Order one of the wireless cards listed in the service manual for the area you live in.

You must only get one of the ones listed in the service manual and it must have the HP part number on it or it won't work.

Usually you can find used wireless cards on eBay for cheap prices.

Do your search by the HP part number.
