Nope - tried all that, no success. Nothing asks me about stereo separation. The built in speakers work fine, good separation left and right. I can plug in any number of headphone and both left and right sounds come out of both headphone earbuds. displaying the playback devices shows L R   ()  left panel 3.5 mm jack

I am beginning to think this is a hardware problem in th jack, possible short between the left and right.

Hi Phil327:

Thank you for your reply.

I understand how frustrating this process is but I am here to help.

I am sending you a link to "Resolving Microphone and Line-in Problems (Windows 8)"click here.

Please see the section on Sound is coming from the headset and from speakers when I use microphone.

Please let me know the results.

I can check the box that allows the microphone to play through the speakers. I hear my voice through the microphone into both earbuds. I can then uncheck the box and I no longer hear my voice through the earbuds. I am using the earbuds/microphone for an iPhone.

Now - I am getting al little crazy with all this.

Playing my LEFT then RIGHT audio file. It seems that the LEFT sound is at full volume, I can still hear the RIGHT at the same time in the left earbud, but, the volume seems to be a little lower. The same applies with the RIGHT ,  RIght is at full volume, left is slightly lower. Does this help?

Hi Phil327:

I agree these issues are very frustrating.

I am sending you a link to "Sound is coming from the headset and from speakers when I use microphoneclick here.

If this has not helped I would try uninstalling and reinstalling.

Please let me know the results.

I did those steps earlier. I have re-installed Windows 8 from the HP recovery area on disk.

Hi Phil327:

Have you tried a playing a different audio file and is it the same issue?

If you watch a You Tube video do have the same issue?

Try downloading the VLC player  click here.

When you play the video file using the VLC player do have the same issue.

I would also suggest updating the codec files (Microsoft document)  click here.

Please refer to Resolution and follow instruction to update codec files.

If it is still unresolved check out the section on Advanced troubleshooting.

Thank you for your assistance. I get the same result no matter which audio system I use, could be youtube, iTunes or any other audio file.

I fail to see why changing the microphone settings will affect the sound being as I get the same result with only headphones, no attached microphone.

I have had it with this, I have changed and tried every audio setting with the same result, left sounds come out of both earbuds, right sounds come out of both earbuds.

My time has value and this is just a waste of my time. I purchased a USB audio adapter $5 - and it works perfectly -

So - unless you hve some definitive answer - I am done.

I had an opportunity to go to the store I bought the HP Laptop from. They have a demo machine set up an I was able to plug in my iPhone earbuds.

I clicked on the speaker, then sounds, then playback, then the Speaker/HP, then configure, then test.

I got the same result as on my laptop, the left sound comes out of both earbuds, the right sound comes out of both earbuds.

I do not think this is a hardware problem as both my machine and the demo machine do the same thing.

Is this a problem with the DTS | Sound that is used by the laptop?

Is there a software or firmware fix for this?

Can you contact HP directly and ask them ?

I am reasonably sure this is not a settings issue or a hardware issue.

Thank you

Phil

I have done some additional research. dts | Sound can provide 5.1 surround -

Is it possible that this is what is behind both left and right coming out of each earbud?

HI Phil 327.

There is a new update for the IND audio driver click here.

I am also sending you a link to a forum post that said it was resolved click here. Please see GodSpeedFx post.

Please let me know the results.
