Hi all, I recently bought a used HP ENVY 17-2101EA on ebay but it has no charger or installation discs. My main question is that when I look at the specs they say it uses a 120 watt charger which seems sensible given its size and power but when I look on ebay there are 2 chargers advertised which mention this laptop - one is "genuine HP" and one is "compatible" but both are 90 watt.

Is this false advertising or will they work and is it essential to have a 120 watt charger? If so what is the serial number of the charger?

BTW the laptop hasn't arrived yet.

Hi:

The a/c adapter for your model is this one...120-W HP Smart AC adapter (PFC RC/V 3-wire)  HP Part # 609941-001.

If you live in the USA, you also need to order the power cord that goes from the wall adapter to the charger which is HP part # 490371-001.

Please refer to chapter 3, page 25 of the service manual at the link below.

You can order these items from HP at the link below.

$63.00 for the charger and $39.58 for the power cord.

Or search eBay and other resellers by the part numbers and see what you can find, which you may be able to find in used condition for much less.

I would not take a chance on a charger with less wattage than is listed in the service manual.

It may work, it may not, or the notebook may draw too much power and overheat the charger.

Thanks for that , especially the last part "It may work, it may not, or the notebook may draw too much power and overheat the charger." which I had never considered!

Kudos +

You're very welcome.

I see that I omitted the link to the service manual I referenced in my reply above.

I have edited my reply and added the link to the service manual.
