HP Elitebook 820 G1 with additional SSD (M.2 - NGGF)

Hello altogether,

I want to use an additional SSD in my HP Elitebook 820 G1 and looking now for the new M.2 (NGFF) SSDs which should fit into the additional M.2 slot . The SSD should be a M.2 form factor with 2242 and just with M-key interface. The disk size should be 120 GB.

Did somebody do this with a HP Elitebook 820 G1 laptop or can recommend a SSD which should work?

I tried to get some info from HP support on this. This is the email with some more information I gathered from internet.

But looking at the picture (second link above vs pictures in 3rd link) it seems like a PCIe and more than 42mm (could be 70mm). I would like to know the following details of the compatible m.2 flash cache card.

• Whether Elitebook 820G1 supports M.2 SATA or M.2 PCIe
• If it is M.2 PCIe, whether it's PCIe x2 or PCIe x4
• The type of key supported by the socket B, M or both
• The maximum length of SSD drive supported (from 42mm up to 110mm)

My own 850 G1 and my daughter's 840 G1 both came with a Lite-On IT 32 Gb .m2 NGFF 42 mm cache. So it's likely that this part is standardized on the G1 line.

Indeed, it's a real nuisance that HP doesn't provide any info on this component and how it's handled.

On my G1 850 installed by an IT Manager, the cache has a liteon driver and is visible in Win 7 64 bits partitions. On my daughter's G1 840, the cache is invisible in Win 8.1 64 bits partitions and no driver is provided on HP relevant drivers downloads or installed by default.

Did you get to the bottom of this? Did you add another drive (aftermarket)?

I know the 820 G2 has just appeared on the HP Malaysia site (http://www8.hp.com/my/en/products/laptops/product-detail.html?oid=7343192) however what I would really like to know is if there is any chance of the M.2 port providing PCIE type speeds - what is encouraging is that in the specs of the G2 it says: 

256 GB M.2 PCIe SSD 

As one of the storage options. I would need more than 256GB but as they offer this as an option, I'm assuming it's faster than the mSata storage options.. 

I'm looking for a < 13" laptop with 16GB RAM and hopefully faster than mSata SSD... one can dream!!

Anyway, regarding the G1, would be great to know if anybody managed to upgrade the stock components and has the specs on what works! 🙂

I'm just start using Transcend TS128GMTS400 SSD on my HP 820 G1 (Win7). So far no problems. Also there is a TS256GMTS400 model with 256Gb on the market. Probably It should work also.

Btw, for those who wants expand memory up to 8GB, HP uses Samsung DDR3L 1600 SO-DIMM 4Gb (M471B5173QH0-YK000) dimm cards.

Do NOT get the form factor 2280!

I took a gamble and purchased this Intel M.2 SSD:

Flew it half way around the world and it DOES NOT FIT!!

Form Factor

M.2 22 x 80mm

and the connector is dual notched.

The HP Elitebook 820 G1 is smaller than 80mm and is single notched.

Going to have to send this back, but thought I would just post this so people don't make the same mistake I did.

I fitted one. I used a 42mm. The dual notch is irrelevant, it works. The size matters, though. Oooerr, matron. 😉

Elitebook G1 is ngff m2 SATA  size 2242

Elitebook G2 is ngff m2 PCIe size 2260

thus no superfast (2GB/sec) NVMe for G1, but 6Gbit/8= 750MB/s max teorical speed (then you have to count flow control overhead, etc)
