Hi, Fred:

The product specs for your model indicates that it has an Intel T5800 processor which is capable of running a 64 bit operating system.

Yes, you can install a 64 bit operating system in your notebook, but I would stick with Windows 7 x64, unless you have Vista x64.

Windows 8 has problems with your model (audio usually doesn't work).

I also recommend you max out the memory by removing the 1GB module, and replacing it with a 2 GB module if you have not done so already.

64 bit operating systems require more memory and hard drive space to run efficiently than a 32 bit OS does.  Not double, but more.

A 32 bit OS with the same amount of memory (up to 4 GB) will probably run better than a 64 bit OS will.

But try it with the 3 GB you have, and if you think the 64 bit OS is not running up to par, then increase the memory by 1 GB. That will help a little. The memory will also run in DDR mode with 2 x 2 GB memory modules, where it isn't now.

Best Regards,

Paul

Here are the specs for your HP G70-120EA Notebook Computer. According to the specs, this model shipped from the factory with a 160GB hard drive and Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit installed.

You can't upgrade a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS and must perform a clean install. You also don't need to replace the hard drive as a condition of installing a 64-bit OS. The existing hard drive will except Windows 7 64-bit as it is. The 3GB of RAM your computer has, will be less than optimal for use with a 64-bit OS but will infact work.

You may wish to install Windows 7 32-bit instead. This may prove to provide a little extra performance when compared to a 64-bit 0S. Drivers for Windows 7 can be found on the HP G70-120EA Notebook PC Drivers page.

Many thanks, my hard drive had packed up so I am using this opportunity to increase my memory to 320gb, 4gb Ram and Win 7 pro.

Once again thanks.
