Hi

I am looking at upgrading my HDD in my HP laptop to a Samsung SSD. But I dont know whether there is anything I need to look out for before buying one or can any Samsung SSD work in my laptop, so please help.

The system info is as follows:

HP G72 B20SA

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

4 GB ram

HDD 1 divided between drive c and d (500GB in total)

Look forward to some help.

Hi,

Your laptop supports SATA II but I have found a video on youtube (type HP G72 ssd upgrade) about a HDD vs SSD speed test and the lappy is a HP G72. It means that even a SATA III drive (Samsung 830) will definitely work on the laptop. I would prefer a SATA II Samsung, Intel or Corsair if the price will be cheaper than for a SATA III drive. The reason is that a SATA III SSD will work as a SATA II because the chipset/motherboard doesn't support SATA III.

In case that you will upgrade to a solid drive a fresh Windows install might be necessary. The thing is that solid drives are usually smaller than original system hard drives and the recovery disks might not work because of a large capacity difference. No problem, all you have to do is to have a product number and follow a tutorial "How to install Windows 7 without the disc" on www.pcworld.com. I suggest to create a list of hardware such as wifi, ethernet, graphics card, audio and then download drivers from your product home page (go to Support & Drivers).
