My HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Select Edition has the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650.  The last driver version released by HP is v8.771.1.0  AMD-ATI's latest mobility Radeon driver version is v11.9.  Subsequent to the latest updates, my video converter software and some other video-related software won't require work...and I get error messages telling me to upgrade my video card driver!  I downloaded the current driver version 11.9 directly fom ATI, but it refuses to install and gives an error message saying contact manfacturer for help.  Talk about a Catch 22!

HP, you put an excellent video card in your Pavilion notebook...but now you diminish that video card by not providing updated drivers!  Why?

Hi,

From time to time, video card vendors release new drivers for their products. HP, Dell, Toshiba ... have to test them before release to their customers/users. I believe HP is a little bit behind with this "game" probably during the last 6 or so months people have been in the limbo. Hope HP will concentrate more on PC/laptop "division" now.

Regards,

TY for sharing your thoughts.  But I think HP is not just behind the times...but doesn't care to support older laptops, not profitable.  My HP laptop is only 14 months old...and the last Radeon driver updates was December of 2010...version 8.7...and the latest version is 11.9.  I bet you my 5 bucks against your one that HP never releases an updated driver....and unlike Nvidia-based cards, I can't update the driver directly from AMD-ATI!  Boo HP!

I have this exact same problem. Ive had my hp pavlilino dv6z-3000 for over a year now and they have not updated their drivers once since i had it Ive ran into a multitude of problems, and my computer is not doing the work i expect it to do.

I cannot go to the ati website and download a driver because it is not the exact driver, and it does not work exactly to its full extent anyway.

Please update your drivers hp.

If i run into a problem with a game the tech support hell flowchart blames hp.

I have a problem with a game > is it a problem with directx: No thats fully up to date > turn your computer power consumption to high power and plug it in: Ok, still no change > update your drivers: Ok i think its update> If it does not work visit amd's website: Does not have the driver for my specific computer>Visit your Oem provider : HP which has not updated its drivers yet.

I also problems with the power lid. It wakes up my computer when i open the lid, and i cannot turn it off whatever i do. It shows a blank screen and to turn it on i have to close the lid which causes it to sleep. It is a  cycle which causes me to force it of and reboot. I dont even want my computer to turn on when i open the lid.

They just dont update the drivers that are needed.

GREAT NEWS -- INSTALLED v11.80 Driver for HP Notebooks ATI Mobility Radeon HD Series 4000 thru 6000

I am currently running ATI Mobility Radeon driver v.11.80 with the latest Catalyst Control Center.  It totally rocks!

Those v11.8 drivers unleash the full power of my HP Notebook's ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650.  Games play much faster with greater stability.  Rendering & conversion of video is now at least 30% faster.

My driver upgrade works flawless with Windows 7 x32 & x64.  It works OK with Vista (minor bugs).  And it does not work with XP.

The last 'official' HP driver v8.7xx is lame in comparison to ver 11.80.  (The most current ATI version is v11.9, but that latest version crashes the HP Notebook...avoid v 11.9x)

It is tricky business upgrading to v11.8.  It took four days of hardcore testing & tinkering with many versions to find the right versions to modify for a rock-solid 'mod' v11.8.  But it was well worthwhile.

The first big challenge is dealing with the 'switchable graphics' feature of the HP  Notebooks.  The last official HP ATI Mobility Radeon contains two graphic drivers: one for the Radeon and one specially modified for the Intel HD Graphics.  If the Radeon and the Intel graphics don't have drivers that allow both to work together, a black notebook screen is the result.

Official Mobility Radeon drivers downloaded directly from ATI don't contain that special modified driver for the Intel HD Graphics.  Without the ATI-mod Intel driver, the 'direct' ATI drivers are blocked from installing...and if you managed to get it to install, the 'direct' ATI driver will not work...again, a black screen is the consequence.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics is definitely the heart of the problem.  Except for that Intel driver, two particular 'newer' ATI drivers work perfectly in the HP Pav Notebooks.  So, the key trick is finding a way to get rid of the 'HP' ATI Mobility Radeon driver while keeping the Intel driver from the last official HP driver version.  Then two recent 'stock' ATI driver versions must be slightly modified to overcome the 'block' to installation.  (The HP Intel HD Graphics driver v8.771.1.0 works great in conjunction with ATI Mobility Radeon driver v11.8.)

Not all 'stock' newer ATI drivers will work.  Avoid the v10 series of stock ATI drivers.  Also, avoid the v11.5 and v11.9 drivers (they are totally incompatible for this project).  Ultimately, the v11.80 is the goal...but you can't go directly to the v11.8 and hope to keep the original HP Intel driver intact (corrupt the Intel HD Graphics driver and the BLACK screen of oblivion is your reward). Just two particular drivers from the v11 series work.  The earlier v11.?? driver must be installed first...then the v11.80 can be installed (those two drivers won't corrupt the 'original' Intel HD Graphics driver, but all other ATI versions do mess up the Intel driver).

I know my rough sketch is not adequate for pulling off this project.  That is intentional.  Without detailed instructions and the pre-modified v11.xx drivers in hand, the average HP Notebook owner should not attempt this driver upgrade.  But with instructions and the two drivers, it is fairly easy to accomplish....and the significant increase in the Radeon's performance is well worth the efforts.

If enough people express an interest, I will post instructions and my two mod v11.xx drivers on Windows Live Skydrive for download.

In any event, I'm using my HP Notebook to write this message...a day after installing the v11.8 driver...no issues or bugs...and it is now time to smoke the competition in Warcraft with help from my newly souped-up Mobility Radeon!

(In case somebody does want to try and experiment on their own, I strongly recommend backing up your system to external drive as well as creating a system restore point.)

I'm interested. I don't really have experience playing with drivers and set ups, but the drivers they provided us with are old.

My laptop is DV6 series and I have a 1gb ATI 5650 series card.

Is it possible to get a copy of that driver from you?

HP Recommended

Yeah sure, I produced stable mods of the hot v11.80...and the prerequisite v11.2 (must be installed first...then 11.8).   With mod drivers, the driver update is fairly easy...but it does involve multiple steps that must be followed precisely to achieve a flawless installation.  Therefore, I would need to write a set of instructions before issuing the mod drivers.

Prior to ATI driver installation, it is essential to update BIOS (from HP version), Intel chipset driver (from Intel), and Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver (from Intel).  Also, you must have at least Microsoft .Net Frameworks v3.5 SP1 or v4 (best) installed.  Then you would be ready for the ATI update.  I learned the hard way about neglecting to perform those other updates first (which also boost your Notebook's performance).

Check back here in a couple days....to see if I have set-up a download package of instructions and hot mod drivers.  (Oh yes, mod v11.8 makes a huge difference in performance and stability....as far as gaming and video editing go, it feels like a new Notebook.)

NOTE for Tweakers:  Original ATI versions 11.5 and 11.9 are highly unstable in HP Notebooks!  Avoid those for mods. Versions 11.2 and 11.8 are rock solid. Only use those versions for mods. (Install 11.2 before 11.8 though...for successful 11.8 installation.)

Ill wait then 😄 hopefully it will work

I'll be waiting as well.

TBH this all sounds very complicated :). I'm not an expert on PCs at all.
