HP Pavilion dv7 has no Power even when plugged in

My laptop's battery ran out today and would not take a charge ... i checked all of the AC cord etc and there is power to the laptop, but now the battery is completly dead and the computer is also dead even when plugged into an AC.  I removed and reinstalled the battery ... no help.

Is this a battery issue?  If it was then why would the computer not work when plugged into the AC?

Any help would be appreciated ...

The first thing to try is a hard reset as follows:

1) Remove the battery and unplug the DC power adapter.
2) Press and hold the power button for more than fifteen seconds.
3) Plug in the DC power adapter (leave the battery out for now)
4) Press the power button

If that does not produce positive results then continue with the following troubleshooting statements.

Is there a power LED lit on the notebook when the piower adapter is connected and connected to household power?

If that is not the case, then the notebook adapter may have failed and is unable to charge the battery or power the notebook on its own.

The power LED acts as a power adapter diagnostic and when not lit is an indocation that external power is not OK.

Ok I did the above steps and still the computer is dead .... the LED light beside the charger input slot is not lit up

With the power adapter connected to the notebook and plugged in, wiggle the connector at the notebook very gently and watch the power led. If it flickers on, then the issue is the DC adapter header connector on the notebook, rather than the power adapter itself.

If nothing happens, then that means that the most likely cause of the issue is that the power adapter has failed. It is far less expensive to replace the power adapter than to replace the notebook.

No flickering light ... do you suggest replacing the power adapter?  Where can I find a new adapter?  Can I use any standard one?  If so what should I be looking for in terms of specs?  If I need a HP adapter where can I buy one and what model should I be buying?  Thanks

Do a Google search with your notebook product name and replacement power adapter as the search terms. The specs are actually listed on the power adapter. Take a look at the small label on it. You will see DC output in volts and watts.

HP has produced and brought to market more than a thousand different models of notebooks and desktop PCs over the years. It is difficult to help you if we don't know which specific model you own..

Method #1: If the notebook will boot into Windows, you can retrieve your Product Number by pressing Fn + Esc key.

Method #2:
Remove the battery and look in the compartment where the battery was installed. You should see a Service tag with printed part number and a product name. Please post the p/n (with all alphanumeric characters) here. If you live outside of North America, it helps us if you post the country of purchase. Also post the installed CPU type. (AMD or Intel)
