Windows defender and / or security essentials does not appear to be for XP and the link you provided is no longer available.
Love to try it but so far not able to download a copy of this.

Link still works for me

This is the link you provided:

https://blogs.microsoft.com/microsoftsecure/2013/11/14/windows-defender-and-microsoft-security-essen...
This takes the reader to a blog post with another link for Microsoft Security Essentials which is what I am trying to get to to download.
The link within your link to Microsoft Security Essentials takes the reader to:

https://www.microsoft.com/library/errorpages/smarterror.aspx?aspxerrorpath=https%3a%2f%2fwww.microso...
Here it states "We are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found.

The URL may be misspelled or the page you're looking for is no longer available."

Consequently the needed Security Essentials download is not available.

Anyone know where to find a recovery solution for the HP Pavilion dv8320ca?  :indifferent:

From all the troubleshooting that I have done since downloading and installing the recent patch provided by Microsoft it appears what has happened is the Windows system files have partitioned and will now not load Windows.
F11 is not bringing up HP recovery

and

as a result of the file fragmentation the XP Repair will not function.

So if I could get some type of download to act as the HP Recovery feature I would love to wipe it clean and reinstall Windows.

Data is not an issue but getting the old off or repairing it is.

You never have been able to download recovery files. You should be able to do a clean Windows XP install. If you have a Windows XP disk it should be easy to do and just let it wipe the hard drive.

Have clean XP disk but because of files being partitioned when I loaded the Microsoft released patch I can not see and the disk can not see the hard drive(s).
I can see it has partitioned the files when I try to open in safe mode - (F8)
I can also see that if I could get to c: and do a chkdsk /r the problem would be solved - (system message through Advanced Options - F8)
However I can not get to the c: drive!

If I could merge the partition files back to the c: drive I would assume all would be back to normal.

If I could get to the OS C: drive I would happily do a chkdsk /f /r!

:womanfrustrated:

Because it is a SATA system the XP installer will not see the disk. You have to load a special driver during XP install.

You can use a usb floppy drive or slipsteam the "F6" driver in the XP install disk. The process is described here:

http://nliteos.com/

You can also use a Linux Live type bootable disk or a Hiren's boot CD

http://www.hirensbootcd.org/

Hirens should have SATA compatibility built in. Its a Windows PreBootEnvironment and should let you run chkdsk from the command line.

ok, thanks, now moving along...
on the Hiren's link you provided I download the Boot Download (upper right of page) onto my disk and then take it and put it in FRED.
Sorry but the other nLite seems rather confusing to me, can not tell which nlite tool to use.
I am frustrated but determined to try and fix this and I really do appreciate all you are trying to do to help!

The Windows XP skills are a bit rusty. I think the Hirens is the way you want to go if you are pretty sure just a chkdsk C: /r will fix the issue. If that absolutely does not help post back.

Well burned the file recoup to a disk but it is an .exe file and will not run
Think maybe I have wrong file and that they want you to buy bootable file

Surely there is something I can burn to a disk for free that will get me to the command prompt?
Or am I supposed to be using the copy of XP that I have and the repair feature...
this is now getting complex
