Thank you for the tip on reseting the Default when the wireless adapter is not recognized. Tried it and it cleared the problem the first time.

Update: Forgot to mention that for this machine, there is no "off"  in Set Up for the wireless card switch. The guy at my kids' school who told me to turn it off in Set Up was working on Dell laptops, not HP. Hmm...maybe I need to look into a Dell for the next computer.

I'm using an HP 1000 notebook.

I had the same problem which appears to started after an HP update.

Windows  (7) was rejecting the Ralink WLAN driver's singnature and keeping it from doing its job. What I did was restarted my computer and pressed f8 during startup. From the startup menu selected "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement". After the Windows started I had my WiFi back.

This is only a temporary solution, I have to disable driver signature enforcement everytime I start my computer. But, for now, it seems like the only way to use WiFi. I hope HP comes up with a permanent fix soon.

Thanks,

Same problem.  I push the button and the wlan comes on but the button stays orange and no wireless networks are  detected.  How do I fix this?

So having lost the wireless on my computer about 5 years ago I refused to buy a new one or pay for a new motherboard. I tried literally everything. Downloading software, resetting my whole computer to factory settings etc and it was dead. I took it into my Dad's work which happened to have a university IT department and they told me it was a motherboard failure which equals a rather large expense. I finially decided to do even more research a couple of days ago and someone mentioned a wireless router on here. I bought the one with the best reviews (for cheap off ebay) a netgear n600 dual wireless router and here I am full and fast internet access!!!!!!! I am absolutely thrilled to bits!!! If you've had the same issue as everyone else on here I'd fully recommend getting a wireless router before you go round and round in more frustrating circles trying to fix it any other way.
