Hello yogoisaac92,

Your mouse and keyboard have stopped working correctly.

Does the keyboard work outside of windows?

Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.

When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.

Let me know how everything goes.

Have a good day.

I am having a similar problem with my pavilion dv7-1245dx laptop.  At times the keys are slow to respond, or have to be tapped many times.  Space bar is an issue, but keys are at random.  My mouse works just fine.  Any help would be appreciated. I know this is an old machine, but everything else works, and I am comfortable with it.

Just wondering if you ever figured out what was wrong with your key board? My daughters computer is having the same problems.

Hello splash2005.

First, try cleaning under the keys using compressed air.

Then try performing a hard reset.  This drains residual power from the notebook and forces the hardware to be reinitialized.  Here are the steps.

  1. Shut down your computer.
  2. Remove the battery and AC power.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds three times.
  4. Replace the battery and AC power.
  5. Verify whether the problem persists and post the result.

I'll keep an eye out for your reply.  I hope you have a great weekend!

AofZ,

I'm the owner of a Dv7-4283cl.  Recently the computer developed what appears to be the long-running, but as yet unsolved g, h, bksp, * not working problem.  Your solution above did not work.  Plugging in a USB keyboard does work but is not a solution.  Reading this thread revealed another user who pointed out this problem has been known in HP laptops since at least 2005.  A quick google of 'hp g h bksp' returned this thread:

This problem appears to be in hardware, specifically the keyboard/motherboard connection.  Do you know anything about this?

I'm having the same exact keyboard issues with my dv6. I could not be more frustrated. I, too, spent $1200 on thi s just over a year ago. HP should be ashamed. Please post if anyone ever realizes a fix. Ugh.

Hello n4n!

I don't know anything about that exact problem.  However, it seems likely that if there is a problem with the keyboard's connection to the motherboard (such as it being loosened) it could cause symptoms such as those.

Have you verified whether the notebook's keyboard functions properly within Safe Mode?

How comfortable are you with opening up the notebook?  If it isn't under warranty you could use the notebook's Maintenance and Service Guide to open the notebook and verify that the connection is secure.

If the notebook is in warranty you should contact HP Support directly.  The number is 1-800-474-6836 for US/Canadian customers.  If you're in another part of the world you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.

Have a great day.

AofZ,

Thank you for taking the time to reply.  I booted the computer in safe mode, brought up a command line screen and tried the g and h keys.  They don't work.  The machine is out of warranty so I will open it up and reseat the ribbon connector.  I'll let you know the results next week.  Have a good weekend.

Hello again n4n.

What was the result of reseating the cable?

I hope you had a great weekend.
