I was attempting to update the BIOS for this computer and something has screwed up. I turn the laptop on and it goes to a black screen and all the lights on the keyboard stay on. That's all that happens. I've tried using the Windows key + B when starting the computer but that does nothing. I wanted to try using the "HP UEFI Support Environment" on a USB key and see if I could fix the issue. I had found a link about it on the HP support website here.

I've managed to set up a USB key, but how do I get the correct BIOS on the key and where do I put it?

Hi ANoland,

This document has a lot more about UEFI and how to use it from a USB drive, maybe that will help get you on the right path, what operating system do you have?

It was running Vista 64bit

Here is where to get the UEFI download, looks like it should be version 2.0 for Vista 64 bit.

Also, did you tried the fix on this thread?

Hope this helps, maybe someone else has more information about updating the BIOS on this computer?

I gave that a go, and while holding the power button down, it just shuts itself back off. So it turns on, runs  a few seconds, then shuts back down while holding the power button down.

I get no beeps or anything with anything I've tried. The computer turns on, to a black screen, all the lights on the keyboard come on, and it just sits there. And I'm not sure if it screwed up during the flash, or if I flashed using the wrong BIOS.

I guess it may just be permanently screwed. I've always heard the warning of flashing the BIOS, but I've done it several times on desktop computers and one laptop and never had a problem. Learning experience I guess. :smileyembarrassed:

Fortunately it was just a laptop given to me, I had been going through and updating everything and figured I'd just go ahead and update the BIOS as well. I thought it'd make a nice second screen for working on something or watching Netflix. Should have just left it alone, oops. lol
