Hello,

I have a HP ProBook 4540s  running windows 7  (desktop shows:  Test Mode  Windows 7 build 7601)

The HDD is a Toshiba mk5061gsyn 500gb

For the last month or so the computer has been running very slow.  The computer has always booted/start windows a bit slowly.    Now it takes about 3-5minutes to get to the welcome screen then it takes a couple of minutes to load windows. Soluto shows all the programs that are being loaded on startup.  (I never messed with this).  I've run several antivirus programs and the system is clean.   Back in June I had the same problem but there was malware found, not this time.

I ran speccy and it shows "warning" under the S.M.A.R.T  section.    I used the HP system tools and ran the HDD test and no errors were found.    When I tried using the HDD test from Toshiba and I couldn't run the scan test, it only showed the model name and serial #.

I'm not sure what to do next?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Hello,   I ran crystalDisk info  and it gave me this message:

Caution [05]Reallocated Sectors Count: 364

So I'm guessing my hd is on it's last leg?

Can anyone recommend a fast hdd  that would be best suited for my  HP ProBook 4540s?

THanks!

I also have the same laptop and had the same problems. I bought a new Samsung SSD drive because I wanted one and was reloading the OS to try and fix this problem as well. Reloading everything fixed my "not responding" errors and speed up my ProBook a little. The problem is that it still takes for ever to get to the Welcome screen, and then takes a while to boot in general. I turned off all startup items in msconfig and I saw no difference in boot time. HP diagnostics ran from the BIOS finds no hardware issues???? To me this seems like a BIOS problem or a weird hardware issue. HELP

Samsung evo SSD. About as good as Samsung Pro SSD, but way cheaper. I think my slow boot up is because of my RAM upgrade to 16GB, I ordered a 8GB GSKill RAM kit. My boss has the same laptop as me and he said when he moved up to 16GB his laptop starting booting slower. Bad engineering by HP and or Intel.

I changed to 8GB of G.skill pc3-14900 ram instead of 16GB of pc3-12800 and I am now booting up very fast, and I am super happy. Now I am curious if 16GB of Gskill will run fast or if my laptop just runs slow with any 16GB ram. My windows ram score went up too from 7.5 to 7.8.
