I can confirm that the G.Skill RAM posted does work. An observation, if I may:
In relation to 4GB Modules, both of the Mushkins (996647 and 997066) that I tried (and failed) to use, as well as the one set of Corsair (CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9) all had 8 ram chips per module. The G.Skill has 16 per module. Perhaps this is the key, and affects the addressing of the memory in some way?

Well, we may never know, that is until someone goes out and tries a different set with 16 chips per module 🙂

I've done a bit of research and the 16 chip means "Low Density". People get mixed up as to what low density means because it actually means a bigger/fatter form factor module, when they think "Low" they think thin/low profile.
Low Density means 16 chips which runs hotter and uses more energy than high density 8 chip RAM. Because of that manufactuers don't often advertise that they are low density. However, some systems, like 2009 era Macbooks have a low density requirement. It's probably something to do with addressing of memory within the device (i.e. each chip requires only 256MB while 8 chip RAM requires 512MB per chip). Also, because they don't advertise it they are roughly the same price as high density ram. Some manufactuers like Kingston are high density only while others "upgraded" so thier old RAM was low density but their current ram is high density.
The next thing to know is that the frequency (1333) is a maximum frequency that the RAM can run, think of it as the maximum speed of a car. Put that RAM into a slower notebook and it will run at the maximum of the notebook, which is like the speed limit for a road. For the HP Probook 4520, 4720, etc. the speed is 1333, but it means you can use DDR3-1600 a.k.a. PC3-12800 chips as long as it is low density (16 chips per module) and the timing is still 9-9-9. I think that the clock timing of 9-9-9 is only available up to this chip and therefore higher speed chips won't work.
I hope this explains why otherwise similar chips aren't working. All that said I'm investing in the previously mentioned, tested and confirmed G.Skill module F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ which are still available new in 8gb 2x4 packs for a reasonable price.

Add two more memory types that are confirmed not working. Won't boot past the Win Start screen and fail the MemTest from a USB key. Both boot to bios and confirm they're recognized at 8GB. The MemTest confirms their present and gives the SPD profile data as well but fails at 20% through the 1st test.:

I'm buying the G.Skill kit (F3-10600CL9D-8GBSQ)
Currently I have 2 chips in my 4520s that work great: Elpida 2GB PC3-10600 1.5V and a Samsung 2GB PC3-12800 1.5V so there shouldn't be an issue with downclocking the Samsung chip from 1600 to 1333 since it runs just fine. I tried a 1600 kit and then a 1333 kit without any luck. Hopefully the G.Skill kit won't let me down...

Hi guys,
After some unsuccessful tries I've stumbled upon this forum and ordered the confirmedly working F3-10666CL9D-8GBSQ G.Skill set, but my vendor messed something up and shipped a different set of modules. I haven't noticed that these chips are not the same that I ordered, and installed them. Memtest succeeded, I was able to install a Fedora 22-x64 on my laptop, everything seems to be fine. These modules are made for Macs, they have 16 chips, so I think that this "low density theory" might be true.

Crucial 4GB DDR3 Ballistix Sport 1600Mhz CL9 1.35V Notebook Ram works fine with my HP ProBook 4520s. The original RAMs were 2 x 2GB Kingston DDR3 1333 MHz. I have performed BIOS Start-up and Run-in Tests. Also, I have performed the MEM Test of Windows 7 (Memory Diagnostic). Both were clear. I also played Unreal Tournament 2004 to see if there are any compatibility issues in stressed conditions. GamePlay experience was good, smooth without any problems.
After this upgrade Windows Performance index for RAM increased to 6.7 from 5.9. So far so good.
I dont know if it is a problem but same as the previous RAM set, this set also runs at 532.1 MHz with latency indices of 6-6-6-16-86.

Maybe this notebook not support 8Gb RAM....
