Well I think I have what files I can get from this thing......can I just reformat the HDD using all of it NTFS and then load Win8 USB and install Windows 8 that way??

HP Recommended

Yes, provided the PC is not indeed posessed.  LOL!

Have legacy mode enabled, secure boot disabled, and you should be able to install W8.

I slayed the dragon!!!!!

So I downloaded Microsoft Media Creation Tool....managed to get to command prompt

Did Bootbcd /rebuildbcd and it found Windows but complained about a few things.....

So then I ran chkdsk /f c:  and low and behold it found a bunch of errors - like index integrity errors, fixing directory links with files, etc.....took about 10 min....

Just for giggles I then tried the Win 8 USB and it let me get to attempt to Repair/Setup etc......but stil showed Windows drive was locked error....so I tried to just do a fresh install....it complained there was a partition missing....

So then I put the HP Recovery USB in and what do you know - it boots and allows to reset it back to factory etc...

It just finished......

Holy moly!  Please don't ever make someone put me through this again.....

Moral of the story -- people, please make sure your laptop has AC power before doing any updates/upgrades etc....

Microsoft DOES NOT like your system losing power through all this (Probably why it says DO NOT turn off your computer during this process haha)

Silly end users.....oh well.......at least now I know what to avoid and God forbid how to potentially fix this issue if it ever happens again (PLEASE NO! ) haha

Paul - thanks for ALL your help - I truly appreciate it

That is great news, and glad that the recovery media you paid for worked.
