I don't know if this will work for everyone but what i did was:
Go to start menu, type Hp Support Assistant and then click tune up. Then click Tune Up Now. After that a little pop up wil show up and it will ask you if you would like to restart now or in 2 hours, click now and then just wait until it is done. Your finger print scanner should be working and your computer tuned up and ready to go.
I hope that this is helpful and that this solves your problems. If it didnt I am very sorry and I hope you the very best in finding a solution. 😄 Have a nice day!

I'm having a similar problem with my brand new envy. I had to do a system restore because apparently there was something relly wrong with the newest windows 8 update. Now I can't get the fingerprint scanner to work at all. This is the message I'm getting when I go into my biometric devices.
Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
Any ideas?

Hi,
New too the forums but have been searching the net for many many hours, thanks to the research and a stroke of good luck I have found a fix for this problem and the "HP Simplepass has crashed" bug while in Google Chrome. I got the bug when i updated to Windows service pack 1, so i'm assuming it's an issue in there, don't follow the advice to do a system restore, updates will only load it again and you'll have wasted a lot of time grrrrrr!
While I consider myself to be a more advanced user i will show you my fix in a way newbies can understand. (If you are an advanced user just do this:- Uninstall your Biometric device driver, uninstall HP Simplepass 2012 and VIP Access SDK, then go too SW Setup and delete SP54680, SP55109, SP56978, SP56487 (save the first 3 too another folder first, it will save you downloading them again, SP56487 is the problem but i tried to just delete it and the problem still existed) do a restart and install the first 3 SP's not the SP56487 though!.... when prompted to do a restart make sure you do... i tried to just install everything first before a restart.... FAIL! ) .. now you're good to go! 🙂
Ok... now for the newbies, don't stress, this is easy peasy 🙂 -
Step ! : Click the Start button > type device manager > select Device Manager >select Biometric Devices > double click Valiity Sensors > select Driver tab > slect Uninstall and follow the prompts
Step 2 : Start button > Control Panel > Uninstall a programme > right click HP Simplepass 2012 and choose uninstall (follow the prompts), once done find and right click VIP Access SDK and uninstall
Step 3: Start button>Computer>select Local Disc (C)>scroll down to SWSetup and double click> find the following SP's and copy them to another folder (documents will do) SP4680,SP55109,SP56978 once done delete them from SWSetup and also look for and delete SP56487. (if you don't do this step the reinstall procedure will fail 😞 )
Step 4 : Restart
Step 5: open the folder you saved the SP's in and double click to reinstall, when prompted to restart make sure you do, even though it's a pain you need to do it, i tried to cheat and failed lol. (should only be one restart though)
Step 6: once this is done i did a restart just to be sure, once started look for the HP Simple pass icon and open it.... you'll now be able to register your prints (another bug ironed out!) and the programme will/should operate as normal.
Hope this helps you, i'm fairly confident it will because i tried it twice and it worked both times 🙂

Tried to post the links for the SP's... wont let me 😞
Important note to my prior post :- if you can't find SP56978 (HP Simplepass 2012) go too the HP website and do a search for it, it will fix the Google Chrome bug if you have it 🙂

My dv7t-4xxx has a similar issue.. it will just randomly decide it doesnt detect a finger print reader.. the white light on the reader wont flash.
Often its after hibernate, but sometimes not after hibernation.
If you reboot, it usually comes back, or will randomly come back.
