HP Spectre x360 - 15t-df100 CTO
Microsoft Windows 11

My USB-C connection stopped working. Again.

It happened abruptly today, my LC49RG90SSNXZA monitor suddenly stopped working.

When I disconnect/reconnect the monitor to my USB-C port, I hear the sound of a device being connected, but get the  "display connection might be limited", and the monitor remains non-responsive, and now only works if I connect it via HDMI connection.

This has happened before. A couple of years ago this happened after some windows updates that were forced, and the issue was only resolved when I basically did a factory reset of the computer.

This happened again a few months ago, and only got resolved when I updated the OS to Windows 11. And here we go again.

I've had exactly the same issue- two HP Spectre x360 laptops, both have lost the ability to connect to a display via USB-C HDMI as of this morning. Have tried a monitor, a TV and a projector, and multiple different cables, and even bought a new one.

One laptop is a 14-ea0015na, the other a much older 13-ac001na.

Hi @Chapayev and @rcpinchey

Welcome to the HP Support Community. Thanks for bringing this to our notice.

Let's start off by updating the Bios and Chipset drivers on your system. Here is a link that will help you: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_2857204-2362249-16

If the issue persists, try the steps recommended below.

1) Open Device Manager. Find the Universal Serial Bus controllers option and single-click it to expand.

2) Find the USB Root Hub option under this category. Right-click it and choose Properties.

3) Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option. Then click OK to save your change.

If you have more USB Root Hub, you need to repeat this operation a couple of times. Please remember to press OK after every performance.

After the settings, plug your USB device back in to see if your computer is able to recognize it now.

If the issue still persists try the steps recommended below.

1) Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.

2) Click Choose what the power button does.

3) Click Change settings that are currently unavailable at the top.

4) At the bottom, uncheck Turn on fast startup option and then press Save changes button.

5) Restart your computer and plug in the USB device to see if it works.

If your USB device still doesn’t work after this change, please change the setting back and follow the next method.

Refer to this article to further troubleshoot USB connection issues.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I spent around 5 hours working through a support script with HP Support via WhatsApp, and there's now a service ticket open for my newer Spectre.

It seems that a fault with the laptop fried the cables and one HDMI socket on the projector, potentially an issue with charging and using USB-C HDMI output at the same time.

Buying a third new cable and using an alternative port on my projector with the old laptop shows that one's still working just fine. I'm too scared to try connecting my new one again now, although I would like to run some tests before I send it back to HP for repair (in case it's not actually the cause of the issue).
