I have an HP Pavilion g6 Notebook, running Windows 8.  A few days ago the HP Support Assistant question mark appeared on the task bar (it was previously, and still is, on the desktop - but never before on the task bar).

When I click on it, either on the desktop or the task bar, the Welcome to HP Support Assistant screen comes up, but Next is greyed out so I can't go any further.

Appreciate any solutions to overcome this problem.

Hi Pipmuffin,

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion g6 Notebook and the HP Support Assistant not working correctly. Here is a link to uninstalling the HP Support Assistant. If you need to download the HP Support Assistant.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I uninstalled the Support Assistant and downloaded/installed what I assume is the latest version.  Unfortunately I still have the same situation.  When I click on the Support Assistant question mark, the Welcome screen opens - but Next is still greyed out so I can't go any further.

Do you have any further solutions?  Thanks in advance.

Hi Pipmuffin,

I would uninstall the HP Support Assistant restart the computer and run the Windows update. Restart the computer again once it is finished.

Are you running some form of Virus Protection?

Let me know.

Thanks.

OK - I uninstalled the program again, restarted the computer, ran Windows update (no updates available as I have it set to automatically download and they were up to date), restarted the computer again, and reinstalled the support assistant (sp64126.exe).  Same result.

I have Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security (automatically updates).

Appreciate your help - do you have any more suggestions?

Hi Pipmuffin,

I think Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security is blocking the HP Support Assistant from running. If the Trend Micro is taking care of your computer you do not need the HP Support Assistant.
I would just uninstall it.

Thanks.

Thanks.  I think I will leave it uninstalled.  I don't know why Trend Micro would be causing the problem though.  I have had the laptop for nearly 18 months and I have been running Trend Micro all that time, but it is only in the last week or so that I have had this problem.

Hi Pipmuffin,

Trend Micro is not causing an issue it is doing its job protecting your computer from intrusions. 2 products trying to keep your computer just clash both are excellent programs. Just 1 needs to be in charge.

Thanks.
