I bought a HP touchsmart laptop and a HP USB external DVDRW drive.  I can burn disc and play music, but cannot play dvd movies. It worked fine with my dektop, I was able to play movies using windows media player.

 

Anybody with a solution?

I downloaded VLC player now its working!

It would help greatly  if you would take the time to  identify your HP Touchsmart laptop and external DVD drive with their respective complete product names or product numbers. Also post the laptop's installed operating system.

 

The full Model No. and Product No. of the notebook - see This HP web document if you don't how to locate the model number and\or product number.

Considering that fact that only Windows 8.1 has Media Center, you made a good choice of an alternative media player (with CODECS) to download.
