Unfortunately the Link ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp50501-51000/sp50516.exe recommended in an earlier 2010 post/answer by billybarrie for reloading the latest file after deinstalling the HP support assistant.msi is not available any more!

uninstall support assistant and reinstall the newest version from here.....
What do you now recommend to handle error 1706 HP support assistant.msi cannot be found (happened after the recent Windows 10 Update, the change from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 was done w/o trouble)?

Try the linked page for HPSA: HP Support Assistant | HP® Official Site
Good Luck

Thanks for this link, but the file sp72974 is already on my laptop.
I did not manage to identify where, but when I downloaded it again from your link and opened it, the system tells, that it is already there.
Why can't I find the file nor does the Windows10 Update find it? Where does hp hide it on my laptop?

That link automatically downloads the latest HPSA version for the OS you are running when you click it.
To find out WHERE it got downloaded to, you have to open the Browser you used to download it and find out where the default Download folder is located. IT is different for each of the Browsers.
Good Luck

Thanks again and Happy New Year!
Yes, I do find the downloaded file in the Download folder as sp72974.exe.
However execution does not solve the problem.
On the other hand the HP Support assistant is definitely on my Laptop, I san open it, it works.
But where in ProgramData does HP hide the HP Support Assistant files? I would like to enter the proper path, when Windows asks for it next time I open my laptop.
Everything runs pretty well, but the Windows error annoys me since it only came up after the latest Windows Update/Reload in December 2015.

I had the same issue with the missing MSI file...what I did was follow the lead of other posters and installed the Revo uninstaller, completely uninstall HP support assistant and support solutions framework. Once that was completely uninstalled I went to the HP support site and downloaded the HP support assistant over again and is has been working ever since. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your probably useful advice! However, this is too much/complicated for me as "normal" user.
The point is, that the HP support assistant does work on my laptop. Only when I start it, Windows cannot find the source (error 1706). I am asked to correct the usual path C:\ProgramData\{C595BE0A-1215-4A80-865-23A0AAAE14EE}\ , but can anybody tell me, where the HP people hide the files of their HP support assistant ??? In order to give my Windows system the right path!
Sad news, but the easiest way for me is to click the error away (two clicks) at aech StartUp- Windows System is happy, HP support assistant works. so why should I take the effort of installing the Revo uninstaller and reload something which I already have?
I hope for correction in the next Windows 10 Update, however!

I understand this can seem overwhelming ( I spent a couple months trying to figure it out) but it's really not too bad.
As far as "my case" somewhere along the "upgrade to windows 10" installation, my HP support assistant became unresponsive. Somehow something in the program file became corrupt, so rather then continue the months long quest, and several failed attempts with "other" uninstaller to remove my HP support assistant (and upon the recommendation of others on this board) I used/installed Revo. That was the only program that completely uninstalled HP support assistant so that I could reinstall fresh from the HP support site (which was updated for windows 10) . I haven't had a problem since. Good luck

Revo uninstaller has a free version, that's the one I used, here's the link I used

Hope it helps, good luck
