So when you say it did not help do you mean the noise was still present with the second hard drive out? I have disassembled quite a few hard drives and never seen any oily gel in there and am not sure just where you are getting your information. Now that I know it runs hot I am leaning more than ever to the theory that the noise is the fan and not the hard drive.

I'm supposedly having the same problem. I didn't try any of the suggestions given here yet. Was there any solution for this case? Was the fan identified as the source of noise?
