I have a Win7 HP G71 that the sound just quit.  Everything looks as if it is fine but no sound.  Almost like the speakers were disconnected.  Any thoughts on why it did this and how to fix it?

Thank you so much for all your help.  I am just going to run into town and grab a USB sound card and hopefully be done with it.

Thanks again!

Hi,

The easiest way to solve this may be to run Windows System Restore.  If you have Norton Internet Security installed, you will need to disable Nortons Tamper Protection as shown in Step 2, on the link below.

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20091112171719EN&ln=en_US

Once you've done this, shut down the PC.  Windows System Restore is usaully best run in Safe Mode.  Tap away at f8 as you start the PC to enter Windows Recovery Console.  Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and hit enter.  When this has loaded, from the Start Menu, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and launch System Restore.  Pick a restore point before the issue with the Audio and then proceed with the restore process.  When complete, Windows will reboot as normal.

Hi,

From windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Can you post back with the all the devices listed here and if any have warning triangles against them.  Can you also post the full Model No. or Part No. of your notebook.

No issues reported in the device manager.  It is the G71-447US.

Hi,

Download the IDT installer on the link below and save it to your Desktop.

IDT Audio Driver

When the download has completed, right click on the installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, shutdown the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter, remove the battery, and then hold down the Power button for a full minute.  Then re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter and start the notebook.

When windows has fully loaded, from windows Control Panel, click Sound.  It should look something like the image below, with the IDT Device ( speakers and Headphones ) showing as the Default Device.  Does it look like this and do you now get any sound?
