This morning after reinstalling HPSA for the second time the program informed me that there were four CyberLink updates to download and install.  HPSA downloaded LablePrint and began installing  it and then:

The Question "CyberLink LablePrint was detected on your system. Please uninstall first.  Do you want to unstall CyberLink LablePrint?"  "Yes"  "No"

was displayed.  I selected "Yes" thinking this would uninstall LablePrint and install the update.

WRONG!

Next I tried to use the standard uninstall.  DID NOT WORK!  I then used GeekUninstaller to erase all references to LablePrint and manually deleted all the files.  The same thing happened for YouCam!

Now HPSA no longer list these two updates.  Media Suite 10 and Power2Go 8 updated OK.

Anybody have any ideas?

Hi GM,

Do you have a purchased version of Cyberlink YouCam software on your computer?

That means, did you purchase an "upgrade" to your orginal YouCam software at any time?

I ask because I went to the Cyberlink website and checked; the LabelPrint Updates applies to purchased software.  The text implies that LabelPrint is part of a purchased package and not something one gets for free.

LabelPrint

It does not mean anything, of course, but I do not find LabelPrint in my standard (non-upgraded) HP provided Cyberlink YouCam software folder.  I could have a more primitive setup and not realize it.  Maybe new computers come with LabelPrint as part of the Cyberlink YouCam package?

======================================================================================

You can reinstall the HP provided Cyberlink YouCam software from your computer's website. The version in your website have those features and options available in the limited packaged provided as part of the HP software package.

Download New Driver for your Webcam:

If you are having real issues getting your webcam to work, or if you have recently upgraded your Operating System, you may have to reinstall your webcam software.

NOTE:  If all else fails and you cannot find a driver for YOUR Operating System, note that sometimes Vista drivers will install and work on Windows 7.  Vista came first - Windows 7 and Vista remain closely related.  Select Vista as your Operating System, then check for driver availability.

Go to the top of the HP forum page to Support and Drivers

  • Enter your Computer Model information, and then go to Software and Drivers...
  • Enter your Operating System in the Drop-down menu...  Scroll down
  • Look for category Software - Multimedia
  • Select the appropriatewebcam software – if available for your system
  • Save the appropriate *.exe installation package on your computer

NOTE the name and the location - the *.exe file will likely save to "Downloads “

  • Install the Software / Driver installation package:  If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package(s) and “double-click” to install, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.

NOTE:  There is sometimes a lot of information at the computer’s website.  Be sure to take an extended look at what’s available.

==================================================================================

HPSA might have wiped out a purchased / Upgraded version of Cyberlink YouCam from the system and then it was unable to reinstall the bits because the software needed does not exist in the HP list of available software.  The "we found this on your system, do you want to uninstall and continue" message probably came from the original program and not from HPSA.  The collapse was a combination of errors.

As to getting HPSA to reinstate the Update List:  If your version of the HPSA shows the option anywhere, you can ask it to "Check for Updates".  Otherwise, the only way I know to reset the software is to wipe HPSA off the computer (Remove it) and then reinstall HPSA from scratch.

I hope this helps, or at least makes sense of what might have happened.  I admit, I am guessing about some of this.

WRONG!  The current downloads are all dated 01/31/13 and all five CyberLink programs are available for download from the HP software download site.

In theory, you are right.  So far in practice the uninstall and reinstall has been less than smooth so far.

Have not tried the Webcam yet!  If it's not broken already, I sure it will be when it sees my ugly mug.

OK I downloaded LablePrint and YouCam updates.  Neither would install.  LablePrint's install program complained that LablePrint was already installed and asked if I would like to uninstall it.  I selected Yes but it did not uninstall and just kept on repeting the question.  I previously uninstalled both LablePrint and YouCam and erased all references to both programs because this is the same problem I encountered when trying to use HPSA to update these programs yesterday.

YouCam's complaint was that the Product definitation file was lost.

Any other suggestions?

GM,

Stupid code.  Smiling.

Try yanking each of the programs out of the computer with this:

Fixit -- Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled

  • Reboot / Restart the computer after the removal is complete and log in
  • Then, download each of the installer packages from your website
  • Install the Software / Driver installation package:  If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package(s) and “double-click” to install, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.

It does not surprise me that your system has on it programs that are not on my own; such was my point.

You can reinstall programs and drivers originally installed on your computer.

This document explains how to reinstall software programs and hardware drivers that were originally installed on the computer at the factory.

Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 7)

Commentary - Personal Opinion:

Here's the thing about the HPSA:  great when it works.  Not-so-much when it won't.  HPSA works better, in my opinion, and it works more consistantly for everything EXCEPT the updates.  HUGE code, and it does so much; it does the updates less efficiently than it does some of the other tasks.  Updates are among the trickiest of the things that can be done with this sort of program - and the fact that it works at all is testament to the code writers efforts.  HPSA does not always do everything as well as one hopes or expects, at least not on every computer.  The program does tend to work better with each new release.

You might be best served by doing your Updates yourself.  You not only have control over what is Updated and When, you have control over how it is done.   There are some Updates that you may decide that you want to delay - or not even put on your computer.  This is personal, of course, and not everyone wants this much control over their administrative rights.  As you develop more of a feel for how your Operating System responds to its environment, you might decide to change the way you manage it over time.

BTW:  You must share the corner on ugly mugs, friend.  There would be far fewer working webcams around if they were sensitive to less than comely visages.   Bad enough that one must test the thing by peering into the lens!  Smiley Very Happy

Was on the phone to HP India for 4 hours yesterday trying to restore this Notebook back to where it was before my attempted update of the CyberLink software and did not check my email and read your post until today.

Tried using the Recovery Manager to reinstall the software but it also failed as previously documented using manual install.

As a last resort, I tried System Restore and it worked.  So now the PC is backed to where it was before I learned my lesson:

NEVER TRUST HPSA.  THE PEOPLE OPERATING IT ARE INCOMPETENT.

FYI, The System Restore took over 1.5 hours to complete.  I am accustomed to using DELL desktops.  I have two, one running XP Pro SP3 and one running 7 Pro SP1 and don't have problems installing most updates.  But this Windows 8 HP has been a continuous problem installing all updates.  I have to run the Update Troubleshooter almost every time prior to downloading and installing any update.

Thanks for the tip about the Fixit program.  Plan to check it out for future use.  I tried using GeekUninstaller on these programs but it did not get the job done.

GM,

Excellent, I am glad Restore worked.  I usually remember to recommend this.  Restore will sometimes work depending on the circumstances and these were ideal.

It can take a while to complete and it seems inordinately long compared to how long it takes to create data in the first place.  How long Restore takes depends to some extent how much it has to untangle in the Operating System.  It is not just file replacement - the registry must be rebuilt.

The nice thing about Restore Points is that you can create them manually - that is, you do not have to wait for the computer to decide it is a "good time" (program installation, program Updates).  You can create a Restore Point when you decide the computer is in a state of "good Return".

Details:

  • Check the document in the link for how this works and how to check whether you have a viable Restore point for this issue

Below find the instructions on how to use System Restore.  System Restore will remove those programs you installed after the Restore Point.  Your personal files and data will not be affected, that is, they will stay as they are.

Most computers already have System Restore enabled on at least the "C" (main) disk drive.  You may have at least one "Restore Point" to which you can return (a previous date and time) when things were working as expected  When you invoke (start) System Restore, it will tell you which Restore Point immediately available and let you know if you can select others.

==================================================================================

How to Use:

HP Notebook PCs - Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows Vista)

Restoring Windows to a Previous Point (Windows 7)

HP PCs - Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8)

Reference

Setting Up Restore Points and System Restore:

Prior to making any changes to your computer, you can make sure you have a Restore Point.  If things go sideways, you can “go back in time”.  This is called System Restore.  Once you have System Restore enabled, the computer will make Restore Points automatically prior to many program installations.  You can also create a Restore Point manually.

Make sure Restore Protection is turned on for the C:\ drive

AND

Control Panel > icon view > System > System ProtectionCreate a Restore Point

 =================================================================

System Restore in Safe Mode:

  •  Completely shut down the notebook.
  • Restart…  As soon as the notebook starts to boot,
  • Keep clicking on F8 until you enter the Windows Recovery Console
  • Find and Select "Safe Mode" > Enter

Once the system starts in Safe Mode:

Start > search / type "restore" > Click to Open "System Restore"

Select a Restore Point PRIOR to the time when the problem started and proceed with the Restore.

HP Support Assistant:

HPSA is an Assitant; this is not a mandatory program on your computer.

You can, if you decide, get along nicely without HPSA on your computer.  Simply remove it.  You can always reinstall it at a later date.  Alternatively, you can leave HPSA in place for the services it can provide and set HPSA to not install your Updates.   It is a matter of choice.

If you do plan to remove the HPSA, take a look at what it does prior to removing the program so you can set up other options to take the place of the HPSA services.
