Hi,

Can a laptop's external video port be used for watching TV?

I have been told that it will only work if my laptop supports dual monitor. Some laptops do, some don't. One that don't will only display on the built in monitor or external, not both at the same time.

I really don't know whether my laptop supports dual monitor or not, although I know my laptop have a single VGA port and a single HDMI port. Could you please let me know where I can check this point?

Hi

On Hp laptops if you have 1 VGA and 1 HDMI you should be able to connect to 2 external mointors.. for use to be sure about it Please give the full name of theproduct you use or the product number..

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot,

I was asking about whether I can use my laptop's screen to my work and the other external screen connected to either  VGA or HDMI to watch TV without interrupting any of the  two screens. However, I conclude from you speech that my laptop can supports two external screens along with my laptop's screen

HP Recommended

Yes and more importantly, the external screens can be set in either clone mode so they are the same as the laptop screen, or extended mode, where you can drag a window such as a browser page where you are watching tv, onto the external screen. So you can go on doing what you are doing and watch your video content at the same time. Not sure what you mean by watching tv. If you mean netflix or other streaming service you just need a web browser, but if you mean broadcast tv or cable programming you need a tv tuner added to the laptop somehow.

You are welcome!!

And yes you will be able to have the different screens on extended mode. Once the moniter is connected press windows key + P as mentioned abave you not be able to watch TV if you don't have a TV tuner card

  1. Select how you want your desktop to be displayed:

    • Computer only (This shows your desktop only on your computer screen.)

    • Duplicate (This shows your desktop on both your computer screen and a projector.)

    • Extend (This extends your desktop from your computer screen to a projector.)

    • Projector only (This shows your desktop only on a projector.)
