When I boot up my Pavilion 15 Notebook, Num Lock appears to set itselfon or off more or less at random;
and as this nasty keyboard does not have a light to display what state it's in, it's a matterof trial & error before I can enter numbers through it.
Time was, you could just edit the config.sys fileand put in a line saying numlock=on, and there you'd be.
What can you do now?

Which do you recommend -
regedit
or
Startup Menu > BIOS Setup
?
You are most welcome!
I would recommend you try both

OK, IT_WinSec, so I tried both of them, but it did me no good:
1) I tried the regedit route as recommended by wikihow :
found InitialKeyboardIndicators already set to 2, so that obviously doesn't work.
But then wikihow goes on to say:
"this might not work because some computers will not override the BIOS.
If it doesn't work then restart your computer" -
and do the BIOS setup anyway, and it tells you how to
access Phoenix BIOS setup.
So obviously the Pavilion 15 is a computer that 'will not override the BIOS'
So 2) I tried going through the Startup Menu as set out in the support.hp.com document:
it tells me the BIOS type I have is Insyde, (so the wikihow instructions are pretty irrelevant);
and this BIOS Setup function nowhere has any offer of any Keyboard Features.
So I guess I'll justhave to live with the established fact that this is a nasty keyboard

Same problem here. Registry key does not work and there is no option to change this in BIOS. I have this problem not only on my HP laptop but also on an Asus desktop. Remarkable that someone, somewhere, screwed up such a basic feature. MyWindows 10 machines use a PIN for desktop logn, so the first thing I always have to do is press NumLock.
