I just want to watch DVD's and it prompts me to upgrade the Cyberlink DVD.  I shouldn't have to pay to watch DVD's.  When I'm offline I can't watch anything. What's going on?

I actually found out recently that if you install the latest HP Cyberlink Power DVD update, it will break DVD playback and you get a message saying this version of Power DVD does not support Mpeg 2 but if you pay $29.95 or something we can give you a version that does. This was on an Envy 17t-j000 model that was restored from the recovery disks back to Windows 8, and it played DVDs fine with the original installation, HPSA promoted for the update, after which the above message appeared when trying to play a DVD. Removed the update and reinstalled to the original version from swsetup and all was good again.

The version I posted has worked on every HP desktop PC and notebook I own that runs W7, 8, 8.1 and W10.

There is an update to the program and after installing it, I did not have any issues of any kind as a result of the update.

I don't have the computer any more as it was brought to me to fix, but I can only relate my experience. I also have to say that VLC is free and will natively play DVD movies very well and with a couple fairly easy and well-documented tweaks can be made to run Blu-Ray movies if you have a Blu-Ray player. The Envy 17t I am talking about had a Blu-Ray player and I think the Power DVD version it had was provided to support Blu-Ray playback so may not have been the standard version.

The version  (12) I posted also supports the playing of blue ray disks.

I can contact the owner and see if I can reproduce the issue, but sure of what I saw and am not crazy. This is it right here:
