I own a HP Pavilion, and I have been using it for years. The original battery worked for a long time but then started to cause the computer to shut down. I was very confused and assumed it was a faulty/old battery. I bought a new one and immediatly after I inserted it, the computer shut down again.

The laptop will work fine using only the ac adapter (the outlet plug-in charger thing) but if I put in either battery (old or new), the whole thing turns off and won't turn back on until I remove it

I'm a student and really need this laptop to be able to travel. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. I like this company and I'll have to switch if the problem persists.

Use the hp battery check in windows or HP support assistant or bios to see if the battery needs to be calibrated. Have you tried calibrating?

I would do that, but the battery needs to be inserted for the diagnostics and calibration to happen (and the computer won't even stay on with the battery in). So it's impossible. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Hey eeemma

Thanks for replying. I'm no expert in this issue. But I'll try to help you.
Put the battery in the unit and run Battery check which is inside HP Support Assistant, make sure you have the latest version, same for your BIOS Version.
I'll try incorporating suggestion from a post I had seen on few other threads on this forum.
Confirm your product number & model name.

I don't know if this will work, but try.
Since till now no experts have commented on this topic, we can try some of the following steps for a moment.

If the battery passes the hardware check there are a couple of other things to try. The Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery is basically the driver that communicates between the computer and the battery. There is a chance that it is corrupted. It is reading the battery level wrong, so the computer thinks the battery level is higher then what is actually is, so when it runs out of juice it shuts down.

Step 1. Go to Device Manager
Step 2. Select Batteries
Step 3. Right click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there
Step 4. Click Uninstall
Step 5. At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driver
Step 6. Restart your computer

When the computer comes back up it should find the driver stored on the computer

Step 7. Go to Device Manager
Step 8. Select Batteries
Step 9. Right click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there
Step 10. Click "Search automatically for updated driver software"

Do the same thing with Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller.

Hope this made something good out of it.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to run the Battery Test because that requires the computer to be ON and the battery itself doesn't allow the computer to be ON.

I am able to do the steps having to do with Microsoft ACPI. But I'm unsure of what it will accomplish

Thank you for this, I've been really nervous about it

Try out the above suggestion. It'll not do any harm. Try contacting HP customer care : http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp

If its out of warranty & if recovery is costly try good third party service centers.

Thanks
