This happened to my laptop twice - both times its returned from HP with 'no hardware fault found' yet it came back working and no explanation of how it had been fixed. It happened again yesterday and rather spend ANOTHER two weeks out of action I trawled the Internet and found a solution.

Take the CMOS battery out and leave for three minutes, boot up and you'll get a CMOS reset error, hit return and it boots successfully. Shut windows down, replace CMOS battery. Job done.

Hope this helps.

Remove all stick of memory.

clean the contacts on the PC and the memory

install memory one at a time, starting the PC up after each stick is put in.

see if that works for you

Yay! Thank-you dangater! I had trawled the www also, and tried the troubleshooting steps for Win81 black screen, HP laptop troubleshooting steps https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05336130 (Link Updated 04/26/2017) several other tips from this forum, and then called HP. Since my warranty had expired several days earlier, I was loath to take this step... but since my laptop (Envy TS m7-j178ca) was useless I hoped the help cost would be less than buying a new laptop. HP service was pleasant, walking me through all of the troubleshooting steps (again), eventually concluding it was a hardware fault so set me up to return my laptop for repair ($251.98). While I was waiting for the return package I read through more HP forum responses, and voila - your solution (disconnect CMOS battery) worked! I called HP; they immediately cancelled my case and refunded my payment without grief.

As was mentioned in another post on this forum, it seems a key step or two should be included in the HP self-help troubleshooting guide before they conclude "call HP"; which means paying for telephone support (out of warranty cost) or shipping it for repair - no doubt with the same results you experienced (no fault found), but laptop working fine when it gets shipped back.  Easy $250 for HP.
Thanks again for posting your solution.

bigmike160 Same problem on my Envy, including HP offer to repair for $$$. Ultimately it was the solution posted by dangater: disconnect CMOS battery, restart, shutdown, reconnect battery). I had previously followed troubleshooting steps "HP Notebook PCs - Computer Starts but Screen Remains Blank (Windows 😎"; determined the blink code https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05336130 (Link Updated 04/26/2017) (but couldn't do anything because the screen remained black); used dust remover spray to clean intake, exhaust/fan ports; and called HP (1-800-474-6836, navigate several voice prompts).

Okay, so if I can't get the computer to boot up, how am I supposed to go the site and update the BIOS? That makes no sense to me at all! What am I missing?? Please help - this is for my son's birthday computer that I bought him less than a year ago. Such a shame!
