When I plug in an HDMI cable to my laptop the screen freezes and a black box forms around the screen. The only thing I can see is my desktop background image. Can't do anything, system is totally frozen. When I disconnect it everything works great again. What do I need to do? I'm using a HP ENVY DV7-7250us with WIN7 (64bit) installed Thanks! B

It sounds as if there is a problem with the TV\Monitor. I note that you have not specified what other inputs the device has. That would help. You call it a monitor. Most of the rest of us are using LCD displays. It is only 20 inch per your description. I wouldn't use it if it wouldn't accept a video signal with a resolution higher than 1024 x 768.

"When I plug in an HDMI cable"

Does that mean without connecting the other end of the cable to an HDTV?

If so, try a different cable.

If connecting the HDMI cable between a notebook and an HDTV, try connecting it to a different TV.

Sorry about that, I didn't know this was such a tight system. Just trying to get a solution.

I tried a DVI connection and it worked. HDMI thing doesn't make any sense, but at least it was able to be resolved.

Thanks for the info - I'll keep it in mind if I have to post a question again...
