The product key of the Windows 8 is embedded in the BIOS chip of your system. Even if the hard drive is replaced, the product key remains intact in the motherboard BIOS chip.

But, in case you got a message so as to activate Windows 8, you have to contact Microsoft or HP technical assistance in your region.

This issue might also occur if Windows activation file gets corrupted. I would suggest you to activate over phone.

1. Press Windows key + X then click Run, then type: slui.exe 4
2. Next press the 'ENTER' key
3. Select your 'Country' from the list.
4. Choose the 'Phone Activation' option:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/customer-service-phone-numbers
5. Stay on the phone (do not select/press any options) and wait for a person to help you with activation.

NOTE:  If your system came with Windows 8 Preinstalled then You will have to install Windows 8 from Recovery disc/partition and then upgrade to Windows 8.1.

If you have installed Windows 8.1 OEM (purchased seperatly) then the Windows 8 key shipped with the unit will not work and you will have to contact Microsoft to get one or activate.

Now, for recovery disk can only restore to factory installed OS that is Windows 8 in youtr case.

thanks,

Would you mind giving the product number, model name, pre installed operating system?

What exact error message are you seeing & when are you seeing it?

In the mean time , go through this MS article and try the suitable resolution:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/activation-errors

Can you use Windows as usual?

Do you have recovery media created using recovery manager after you set up your laptop first time?
