I have a HP Pavilion dv9000 which sits on a desk, open most of the time. Now I'm trying to close it to take a trip and the top won't close. If I try to force it, the frame starts to pull away from the display. It looks like the hinge at the left side is jammed. Is there anything I can do?

That is a very common problem on the dv9000. The hinges seize. Stop trying to move the lid. The seized hinge will start to destroy plastic and surrounding metal parts. The hinges are readily available:
Here is the Service Manual:

You have to remove the screen and then open up the screen housing and replace the hinges. It sounds harder than it is.
