Hi everyone,

 

I have a ZBook 14 with a factory installed 256GB SSD (product number F0V04EA#UUZ). I wanted to install a second SSD in the M.2 slot in the laptop, which is actually labelled as “SSD”. As I run some write-heavy VMs on the laptop I figured I could push them off on to a cheap secondary SSD both boost overall performance and to avoid excessively wearing the main SSD.

 

So I got this cheap 2242 M.2;

And installed it in the slot. In physically fits and the HP diagnostics show it as a second hard drive with the correct details. However it doesn’t show up in Windows in Device Manager, or naturally in Disk Management.

 

Does anyone know if it’s possible to use the M.2 slot for a second SSD please?

Here is the Manual:

The M.2 slot can be used for "flash cache" with Intel Rapid Start Technology, or apparently it can be used as the storage drive. See Page 4 of the Manual. Flash cache will not work if there is a main SSD installed. That is because you cannot accelerate an SSD with another SSD. However, it speaks of a "no flash cache" option which allows the M.2 SSD to be used as a main drive. There is no specific listing of the options in the BIOS, but I would think a "no flash cache" option would be implemented in the BIOS. Have you looked to see if there is such an option?  I would also open the Intel Rapid Storage console and see how the M.2 drive is showing up there, if at all.

Thanks for the suggestion Dean, however...

 

After I couldn't get the SSD to show up this morning, including looking through the BIOS for some relevant settings, I removed the card, posted this thread and went to work.

 

This evening I re-installed the card to try your suggestions and... it showed up in Windows! I haven't changed any settings, software, anything at all, but now it works. I’ve been able to format it and move my VMs to it so it seems everything is suddenly OK.

 

Oh well! 🙂
