I have set up the registry as you recommended. I also restarted the computer.

No change. 3 Finget tap still opens cortana.

Here is my current registry settings:

Hmm.  Only thing I can think of is the same key is being overridden somewhere else.  Look for the same key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER.  Also look here and delete anything about 3 finger tap:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTP\Defaults

Or search the registry for that key.

Editing the registry is dangerous, blah, blah.  You should export the Synaptics parent key before you mess with it.

Thanks for your guidance. I have found the solution for my HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13-ae0xx.

In order to make 3 finger tap simulate middle button click I need to change the value of 3FingerTapAction to 4 in the following location:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\DriverDatabase\DriverPackages\synpd.inf_amd64_318aa16b062fddc3\Configurations\HP__0153__PS2_Inst\Driver\Software\Synaptics\SynTP\Win10

Now, it's not as easy as it seems, since this  value is locked for editing.

Use this guide to change ownership of this registry directory https://www.howtogeek.com/262464/how-to-gain-full-permissions-to-edit-protected-registry-keys/.

No need for restart, it works immediately after the change has taken place.

Here is a screenshot of my registry after the change.

I hope this helps other as well.
