Hi! I'm new around here so please excuse me if my methods are absurd. Anyway, I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop with athlon processor and it's worked wonderfully for me for about two years. Recently I've had a problem with overheating--it started about two months ago. What happened was that the top left corner (when it's in you lap, where there is a fan) got very, very hot. We could only use it for fifteen minutes at a time. I tried getting a laptop cooler to solve this problem. That area of the laptop still got quite hot, but the laptop cooler worked effectively enough to prolong the time for which we could use it.

Now yesterday something new happened. The laptop was on suspend with the lid turned down and it is set to wake up when the lid is opened. My sister had used the laptop about an hour or so ago and it was working fine. When I opened the lid an hour later, a small flame shot up in the said top left corner (seen by me as coming from the place where the screen is connected to the body.) There was smoke and a smell and the computer imediately shut off. I tried turning it on and off several more times later that day and today. At first it worked well but the next few times there was a spark when I turned it on as well as a spark when I turned it off--plus smoke and a smell. I am not turning on the computer or doing anything with it until I can figure out what's happening. Explanations and advice are greatly appreciated.

The reason it would shut down is because it was overheating.  [text removed]

The shutting down never happened before the flames and the sparks. We always took care to suspend it when it got too hot and used it again only when it was cold again.

Hi,

You had the laptop for over 2 years now and i suppose you dont have an extended warranty. But i suggest you call HP to get your case esclated as a "pulse incident" where safety is concerned.
