Tried a bunch of this things and the following WORKED.
1) Unplug the charger from the computer. Take out the battery. Hold the power button for 1 min (30 seconds didnt do it for me). Fit the battery in again. Try starting it. If it works great.
2) Try same process and this time not the battery but plug the charger. If it works then your pc just needed some fresh start.
If 2 doesnt work, then you have issues with the hardware.

My friend has a g42-415dx and it wont turn off. I tried that discharge with everything disconnected and count to a minute or so and nothing works. I notice the light by where the power plug plugs in the hp system lights on but everything else not so. What should I do? I tried to power without the battery nothing, with it nothing any suggestions?

That worked amazing!!
@Huffer wrote:Try removing the battery and the power supply and hold down the power button 30 seconds. Now plug in the AC adapter and try to start it. Yes a battery can be so dead it keeps the laptop from powering on. The power supply might also be dead but unlikely if the indicator light comes on next to where you plug it in.
that worked thank you sooo much!

I finally gave up trying to start mine and took it to the repair shop just yesterday. They told me that it was completely shot. Said the DV series had a real problem with overheating, and they just get so hot they often fry the connections on the motherboard, if not the entire board.
Apparently, if you try to turn it on and can hear the fan running, there may be some hope. If you hear nothing, it's really most sincerely dead.
This is just the result of bad design. HP should have known better.
