Hello Flameslicer. I understand you cannot connect wirelessly in Windows 8, is this correct? However, it did work in the release preview?  Did you upgrade from Windows 7 or is this a fresh Windows 8 install?

I checked the Support Page for this notebook and do not see Windows 8 listed. When was this PC purchased? If it was purchased after October 1, 2011 it may not be fully supported. You can find more information about Windows 8 upgrades and HP here.

Since the device worked previously either the manufacturer of the wireless card has released drivers or Microsoft has in-OS drivers for the card. To begin the current drivers for the wi-fi need to be removed and reinstalled to verify it is not a corrupted driver.  Normally you would go to Device Manager from the Control Panel to do this. However, the steps are different in Windows 8.

  1. Mouse over to the top right hand corner of your screen and slide the cursor down. This opens the Charms Bar.
  2. Select "Search" from the Charms Bar
  3. Type "Device Manager," select "Settings," and then choose Device Manager to the left.
  4. Select Network Adapters in Device Manager
  5. Uninstall the drivers for your wireless card.
  6. Reboot the PC and allow Windows to find and install the hardware.
  7. Test wireless connectivity and post the result.

I hope I've been helpful, let me know how it goes!
