Hi,
I'm looking at buying a new ultraportable laptop and like the look of the new DM1-4000 series. However, it looks as though there are two versions available in the UK - the DM1-4004SA and the DM1-4027SA. From the datasheet pdf's, the only discernible difference seems to be the maximum amount of installable memory (4GB in the 4004, 6GB in the 4027). I can't understand why HP would impose this limit as both have 2 user accessible so-dimm slots - my preference would be to upgrade the memory to 8GB by replacing both of the 2GB so-dimms with 4GB (after installing W7 64-bit rather than the stock W7 32-bit windows it ships with).
My question is this - Are these 4GB or 6GB limits correct or is this just a marketing thing?
Interesting, the DM1-4000 series Maintenance and Service Guide (PDF) states the max installable memory is 8GB.
Thanks in advance. Any insight much appreciated.
Edit: Also noted there's a 4020SA and 4020EA model... both also state 4GB Max memory.

It doesn't make much sense, does it?
The service manual clearly states that notebooks with the AMD processor have 2 memory slots that can each hold 4 GB of memory. See Chapter 1 page 2.
Now, the Intel based PCs seem to indicate they can only hold 4 GB of memory maximum--one customer accessible slot.

Hi:
You can install 8 GB of DDR3 memory in all of those models.
The amount of memory listed in those models is only what HP put in them.
The 4020 EA for example, shows it comes with 4 GB of memory, and it states on the product specs that it is upgradable to 4 GB of DDR3.
I agree that it would have been more clear if they just put maximum memory supported is 8 GB, but instead they chose to say it comes with 4 GB, and you can upgrade it to (another) 4 GB of memory.

Many thanks for your reply. If that is the case, then the description is indeed very misleading, The DM1-4027SA datasheet states...
Memory 4 GB DDR3
(2 x 2 GB)
Total slots: 2 user accessible
Upgradeable to 6 GB DDR3
See link...

I bought the DM1-4004.
- Removed the 2 x 2GB so-dimms and replaced with 2 x 4GB
- Removed the 320GB HDD and replaced with a 120GB SSD (SATA-3)
- Loaded Win 7 64-bit instead of the 32-bit version it shipped with (using Product Key from the bottom of the DM1. Activated without any issues)
- Download and installed all 64-bit drivers
Working superbly with 8GB and increably fast!
Thanks for the advice.

Hi:
Download and run the free Crucial memory scanner, which will analyze your PC and report what kind and how much memory you can install.
