I have the same exact problem and have been trying to fix it for several months and have tried everything.
I've done a system recovery several times and it didn't work, I've tried reinstalling the driver and every other thing suggested on the internet and the sound dissappears again. each time I run the memory diagnostic tool the sound will work again but it eventually disappears again so I thought that I had a memory problem and did everything possible to fix that but the problem continues. I called HP for help and the guy told me he suggests I get a new laptop! **bleep**????!!! I payed a $1000 bucks for this laptop....are these people joking??!!
It's an HP pavilion 2810
There must be something wrong with the sound card or processor...I'm never buying an HP product again!

I have fixed the problem. I got rid of my HP but only after I watched the sound go, then cd rom and finally it would not start. I gave it to a friend and went out and bought a Dell. My friend took it to a repair shop and was told that after doing many tests, he was told that it was in the motherboard and since the board on these laptops controls everything it went piece by piece. If you read the posts and there are alot since this has been going on for years some owners tried different op systems with the same result. Make HP feel the pain as you have. Bite the bullit and buy something else.

Flip over laptop so the bottom is facing you, undo the two screws that hold the RAM cover in place.

Mine has also gone again, what I am able to tell you is this.
Becuase the laptop generates a lot of heat and I do mean a lot more than other models or makes, I have seen reports on the internet that the audio chip becomes corrupt because of the heat, it seems that the chips soldered joints become weak and seperate from the motherboard thus not working properly.
I have come to the conclusion that pushing the RAM in again may of temporarily made a connection and it was merely coincidence that the sound worked for a short amount of time.
Now I have a Pair of Microsoft Life Chat LX-3000 headphones that also include a microphone, now I use these for Skype as they are crystal clear for a cheap price and they are USB.
When I plug the headphones in I get sound back and it works very well but remove then from USB and no sound again, so I now listen to stuff with the headphones in and to be honest its fine for me as laptop speakers are generally quiet anyway and are a bit useless.
