I have the same problem here. Sometimes it comes back for a little, mostly not. It seems there's not a on-size-fits-all solution, and that many people like me have a problem which the simple fixes like driver reinstalls won't work for. There are a couple of interesting things though, that I've picked up from others, which might interest you.

1)I don't know if you're in the UK or not, but apparently here, we have the Sales of Goods Act, which means if it can be shown there is an inherent problem with a product that wasn't obvious at time of purchase, such as a common fault developing I would think, then the seller (not the manufacturer) legally should either replace, or refund in full or part for up to 6 years after.. Which is obviously longer than the warranty. Seems a little hard on the seller, but I thought I'd mention it.

2) There might be a simple work-around solution, just so you can hear things again, and that's to get a USB adaptor with built in sound. I just bought one off ebay for £2 odd. Haven't got it to try yet though. Here's the same thing on amazon;

Hope that's of some use to you, VintageGirl and anyone else.

I have the same problem with you but I found out once you upgrade your pc to windows 7 there's always an issue. You'll try calling HP Tech, and they will refer you to PC techinician nearest to you because they said there's something wrong with you HD blah blah or you sound card is gone...need a new one. Well I nearly believe them until I stumbled what's causing my problem and I fixed it myself. Now I have no problem with my sounds missing or audio device missing. My Laptop has voice now non-stop.

The problem that cause wasn't about the hard drive or the sound card but it is about the CONFIGURATION OF YOUR PARENTAL ACCOUNT CONTROL IN WHERE YOUR AUDIO SOUNDS HAS TO BE USE. AFTER I SET MINE TO WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE RIGHT OPTION, SINCE THEN I HAVE NO MORE PROBLEMS ABOUT MY SOUNDS OR AUDIO.

SOLUTION; Click Start/Control Panel/User Accounts and Famill. Click Parental Control. In the box at the left side you will see GAMING RATING SYSTEMS. Click Gaming Rating System and click administrator box Yes. In the box you will see some LOGO ICONS for you to choose in which gaming rating you want to use your sounds. This is where you must configure you computer what rating is compatible to use to run sounds in your Windows 7 from Windows Vista or Xp.

The previous option in my Laptop was in the 3rd option ESRB. Then I move it to the 2nd option that the LOGO is written in Chinese Language( Computer Software Rating Regulation). I click OK and then Restart. Since then I have no missing audio or missing sounds problems.

I hope that helps.

The issue appears to be in an update that microsoft has put out.  That's when all my trouble began with my pavilion 6500.  Sound works for a while then goes away.  System will not let me uninstall driver.  Now cd drive will not work correctly and will not recognize disks.  I have spent hours with windows team to try and figure this out to little avail.

It looks like the solution is to go to a MAC.  I hate the thought but will not buy laptop to have microsoft screw it up!!

It's not software issue. It's hardware. Your whole motherboard needs to be changed because of loose connections, which explains missing DVD drive, getting stuck on boot screen, no sound, SD card reader not working.

Never buying HP again...not that they care for their customer satisfaction anyway..

I too have had this problem.  I reinstalled OS to XP, Win 7, Vista Business, none of them worked.  I did find though if you attach an external usb sound card, like Creative Sound blaster, to it, it works.  But you will have to have headphone and microphone attached.  At least that fixed it...  What a pain in the butt HP!!!!!

Apparently Sunshinef didn't appreciate my language this morning. Now I thought the people here majored in computer science and not enligh. I mean seriously, if you can take the time to correct grammar and punctuation, how about taking the time to correct the tech glitch? This is nonsense!!!
