On HP 50g "Warning: LowBat (S)"   put in new alkalines, still the same message. Appreciate any help.  sruhant

Strange.  Here are some possibilities (unlikely, but possible):

(1) If a USB cable is plugged into it, try unplugging it.  It might be drawing too little power from your USB source.

(2) Test the cells in another device.  Sometimes even brand-new alkalines are not strong.  The 50g doesn't care how new they are; it only cares how strong they are.

(3) Try changing the CR2032 backup battery. Shouldn't matter, but it might.

(4) Try cleaning the battery contacts with a pencil eraser.

(5) Try running BTMON, a 50g battery monitor program, available free here: http://www.hpcalc.org/details.php?id=6587

This will give you an exact indication of the voltage coming off your batteries.

(6) Something might be wonky in memory, so see if wiping memory to factory status helps.  Press ON+A+F, then No.  Warning: This erases everything in the 50g's main memory (not port memory), so be sure to backup main memory to a port if you have anything in main memory that you want to save.

Let us know if any or none of these ideas help!

Hi,

Just got the very same message on both of our hp50g.

Changed the main batteries (all quality brand alkaline) on both: same message.

Changed the backup (coin) battery (all quality brand): same message.

So I guessed the battery warning did NOT have its cause in the battery, but in the calculator.

So I ran the autotest aka internal diagnostic by pressing simultaneously ON & F6, and went through all the diagnostics.

The diagnostics did not find anything wrong in the calculators, BUT it has cleared the warning message on both.

After exit (press ON & F3 simultaneously), the warning message did not re-appear.

The full procedure is better and fully described in the following pages:

http://www.finetune.co.jp/~lyuka/interests/calc/hp50g/

https://www.educalc.net/1855486.page

My  advice: do NOT buy batteries in advance in order to always get the freshier batteries possible, and always choose quality brand batteries.

Best,

Bruno

I got the "LowBat(S)" message and replaced both main AAA batteries and the CR2032 battery. Message wouldn't clear. Tried option 6 in this topic (Pressed "ON + A + F".  A menu popped up but there was no  "NO" option. Assumed a typing transposition error in the post and selected "ON" which does a reboot. LowBat(S) message disappeared. Added note: I was lazy and didn't change the batteries when the LowBat(S) message first appeared. In fact, I think I waited 4 months before changing them. I don't know if that caused the message lock up.
