Hi
I have been left a laptop from a family friend and it is broken. I can turn it on and the LED's light up but the screen stays blank. I have tryed turning it off, taking out the battery and the power cable, holding the on button for a minute the turning it back on again but the screen is still black. I think the problem might be something to do with the graphics card but not sure. Any help would be great.
Thanks Josh

When you press the power buttn does the notebook make normal startup noises, including a flashing led on the DVD drive?
Have you considered connecting an external display to see if there is a normal Windows login screen?
Locate a flashlight, power the notebook up and shine the flashlight on the display. What do you see? If you see a very dim Windows logon screen then the display inverter has failed.
Lets start with you helping us by identifying your notebook completely.
HP has produced and brought to market more than a thousand different models of notebooks and desktop PCs over the years. It is difficult to help you if we don't know which specific model you own..
Remove the battery and look in the compartment where the battery was installed. You should see a Service tag with printed part number and a product name. Please post the p/n (with all alphanumeric characters) here. If you live outside of North America, it helps us if you post the country of purchase. Also post the installed CPU type. (AMD or Intel)
Don't forget to post the name of the installed operating system if you haven't already done that.

erico

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.
The product is a Pavilion dv6-2120TX. The product number is WF649PA#ABG. I live in New Zealand and I am asuming that the person who bought it (It is third hand) was from New Zealand aswell, so New Zealand was the most likely place of purchase. The CPU brand is Intel. The installed operating system is probibly Windows 7.
I have tryed plugging it into a external display but it just said no signal on the display. When I start it up it does make sounds like it is starting up and the LED next to the DVD drive does flash. Sorry but I see nothing when I shine a flash light into it. I did notice when I turned it on for about 5 minutes the LED next to the caps lock and the LED in between the end and pg up button on the number pad flashes. Hope all this helped.
Thanks, Josh

The leds will generally flash in a repetitive sequence. Count the number of flashes.
Have you tried reseating the memory modules? Failed memory module = no video output!
Have you tried removing the hard disk and then powering the notebook on to see what happens?
Follow all of the troubleshooting on this HP document that you have not already tried. It is a rather extensive list.

Follow the document.
If you try everything and it still refuses to start up, even without the hard disk, then it is probably the end of the road for the notebook.
