Hey, my laptop all of a sudden started making this really loud sound from the fan i presume. i went through it and nothing was in it or anything. can someone help me before i spend too much money with the geek squad? it kinda sounds like someone put a deck of cards on the fan and is just letting it tick.

Hi,

Sometimes the fans start malfunctioning in laptops after time and need to be replaced. You could replace it yourself or bring to technician.

It is a quite involved process but not too dificult with patience.

Anyway, here is the service manual and you can see the various steps involved on page 79:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03593667

When removing the fan from heatsink you will need to replace the thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink. You can use lintfree cloth and alcohool or TIMremover to wipe away the old thermal paste. Use high quality thermal paste (the silver kind). Apply only a little amount, a grain of rice and spread a little. It will spread out with the pressure of heatsink once screwed on again.

between the heatsink and GPU there will be a thermal pad, you can reuse the pad, be delicate when removing the heatsink.

The part number for the fan is 680551-001 and you can find it online for good prize.

Example:

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=680551-001

You can also order the part from HP parts store. Here is link how to do that:

David
