My Pavilion dv6 which I bought about 2 years ago is running very hot.  That is the left side of the keyboard area, between the left most keys and the edge of the fromn, where I put in the wired ethernnet and audio plugs, etc.

Once under normal climent conditions the laptop stopped, I let i cool down for 30 mintues, did 15 min. of work at it stopped again.  It is usually very hot.

I had i professionally cleaned, and bought a external fan to put under the laptop, but it still runs hot.

Did you guys put in a hot running processor or something?

ANy solutions?

Hi billyo,

Can you share the full model number of your PC, that sometimes helps to troubleshoot.  See How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? if you don't know how to find this information.

Has the laptop always run hot, or is this a new symptom that you are dealing with?  If this is something new then there may be something wrong that needs corrected, but if it has always run hot, then it may be normal for your laptop, see Why Computers Generate Heat.

When you had it professionally cleaned did the technicians say anything about the PC and the state of the motherboard or processor?  Over time the thermal grease between a processor or graphics chip and the heat sink can get old and brittle and not conduct heat as well.  If that is what you are facing, it shouldn't be too expensive to have the heat sink(s) removed, new thermal grease applied, and the heat sink(s) reinstalled.  The cooling fan is another thing that might wear out over time, so you might need to check and make sure that it is still performing optimally.

Another idea to explore is there are some shareware apps that might let you monitor the temperature of your CPU and take a more active role in managing the laptops temperature.  Visit a reputable site like CNET.com and search for temperature software to see what is available.  With such software, you can monitor the temperature of you PC and even control the speed of the internal fans in some cases to help with internal temperature buildup.

Good Luck!

Hi, Billyo,
I just saw another user successfully fix the overheating problem by clean the dust inside air vent. Please refer his article in the BBS.

HOW TO FIX DV7 FAN/OVERHEATING PROBLEM!!

I have seen this many times on these laptops. The dust and dirt builds up inside the fan housing and it is very difficult to remove without stripping the unit down.

Take a torch and shine it into the vent, can you see clearly inside or does it appear blocked? Sometimes you can get a Hoover with a small nozzle and hold it to the vent. This may remove some of the dust and fluff build up. Be careful about trying to push in paper clips etc to break up the fluff etc as you could push one in too far and break the fan which could then prevent it from turning...then you will really overheat things!

Stripping down the laptop is not difficult if you have the necessary skills but if not I suggest you find your nearest HP service centre.

I'm reluctant to do the dis-assembly many are recommending.  It seems risky to me as an amateur.

I had success placing a vacuum intake over the fan inlet while simultaneously blowing compressed air into the exhaust vents.  A 2 minute treatment like this made a huge difference.  It runs cooler now and the fan either doesn't run or runs much slower.  I will just do this from time to time in the future.

My loptop is running hot as th fan now runs continously whereas before is did not unless in a case of very high useage,

I will try it.  Thanks
