Greetings. I have an HP Pavilion g7-1368dx laptop with Windows 7 that I purchased in June 2012, so it's out of warranty.
A couple weeks ago it had a thermal shutdown one time during use. After cooling down, the laptop functioned fine for a few uses, but then it started giving the startup warning message, "The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly," with additional indication about potential damage if the computer is operated in that condition.
I ordered a new fan and replaced it, and I cleaned the fan grill in the process (though it wasn't incredibly dirty), but I still get the same fan error message. I went to HP's website and saw the suggestion to do a "hard reset," so I did that, but the problem still persists.
I saw another suggestion of trying a BIOS update, but I figured that wouldn't be advisable since the fan isn't working. Would you suggest going through with the BIOS update attempt anyway?
Is there anything else that I can try before ordering a new system board?
Thanks for your assistance.

Welcome to HP Support Forum and we are glad to assist you
It looks like you are having difficulties with regards to the Cooling Fan of your Notebook
We will surely assist you with this
According to the message you have posted I suspect this is purely a hardware issue where in your getting "System Fan(90B) - The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly" message. This is a mechanical fault and the Cooling Fan on your Notebook and needs to be replaced before the Notebook starts up with an Overheating Issue.
Causes/Reason for this Issue:
1. Sometimes this is just because of Dust, Pet Animals Hair slowing down the fan
Perform the below shown troubleshooting steps:
Step 01. Turn OFF the Notebook
Step 02. Un-plug the Power/AC Adapter and also remove the Battery too
Step 03. Press and Hold the Power Button of the Notebook for a full minute
Step 04. Now let's re-insert the battery back in and plug back the Power/AC Adapter
Step 05. Start the Notebook and keep tapping F10 Key during the startup to access the BIOS
Step 06. Once you get to the BIOS, Please press F5 Key to load setup defaults for the BIOS
Step 07. Now let's press Esc/Escape Key. Save Changes and Exit - Yes
Step 08. Now please wait till Unit loads Windows and then Shut down the Netbook again
Step 09. You should clean all the Vents and Openings really good with a can of compressed air
Note: If you are still getting the same error we need to replace the fan
I strongly recommend you to immediately Contact HP Technical Support over the Phone for further assistance without any delay to get your Netbook Fan replaced and serviced by an authorized HP Certified Engineer

Greetings and thanks for the reply.
I get through step 5, but even with tapping F10 repeatedly, it still comes up with the "cooling fan is not operating correctly" warning. At that point, should I press Enter to continue on with the startup, and then go back to pressing F10?
Thanks again for your assistance.

Greetings again.
I am wondering if someone could answer the last question I asked. When the startup stalls due to the "cooling fan is not operating correctly" warning, is it safe to press Enter to continue on with the startup in order to tap F10 to access BIOS?
Thanks....

I do want to add one other detail to clarify a discrepancy with the instructions, though.
Step 07 says to press the Escape Key to get the "Save Changes and Exit" option, but pressing the Escape Key actually brings up a box asking to discard the changes. Luckily I found that pressing F10 again (rather than Escape) gave me the option to "Save Changes and Exit."
Anyway, thanks again!
