Title says it all!
Friend's G6 laptop is locked with a power-on password, long since forgotten.
I've seen numerous threads started by people in the same situation; generally the OP posts a halt code and then someone in the forums responds with an unlock code.
How are these codes generated and how can I generate my own code unlock code?

Once I use my halt code to generate an unlock code and get into the BIOS (I'll do it when I get home), and get to the stage that i'm removing existing passwords, and it prompts me for the previous/current password so I just use the unlock code again?

Youre very welcome.
Yes, you can do that but you can also clear the password if you want and either do without or set a new one.
Please see this post marked solved for how to clear the password from the security menu.

Thanks again...
Are there circumstances under which this won't work? My friend tells me they tried to code I generated and it didn't work.
It could be a matter of a typo...
Also, there is more than one code generated - is it always going to by the Insyde(generic) one?

Thanks for the reply.....
Last question - should I enter the code i generated in the box when starting up, OR do i first go into the the bios (by press escaping then enter bios from the menu) and then use the unlock code only to remove the current password?

You're very welcome.
You use the unlock code when you are first asked to enter a password.
Then you should be able to get into the BIOS menu and follow the instructions on that other thread to clear the password.
The unlock code is basically the new password.
