I had same problem on a brand new Probook 6550b. I SOLVED my issue by checkin the task manager and the running processes and looking which one was activated everytime i heard the sound lagging or noisy. It turned out to be this **bleep** one:
IAANTmon.exe
it's the RAID monitor utility installed by the Intel Chipset Software.
Killing it and excluding it from the system startup sequence (if not strictly necessary for your own job, of course) made the problem solved forever.
Hope my solution will help someone else in here.

Thanks for the help guys! This is just another exmple of why manufacturers shouldn't ship crapware that we'll never use anyways. Another thing you can do is to edit the priority of the HPAA process, but it's a time consuming option and I haven't checked to see if it will carrier over for multiple boots yet. Still, it helps if you don't want to uninstall HPAA entirely
